The reason feminist has a negative connotation is because feminists are obnoxious. They want equal rights, but they don't want the responsibilities that come with all those rights. I refuse to be a feminist of any kind. I refuse to jump to conclusions and shout discrimination at the slightest provocation, because if there's a really good way to turn people against everything you stand for, it's to piss them off by overreacting. I'm going into a male-dominated field, but life will be much easier for me if I behave as if there is a reason to respect me, and not as if I deserve it because women were discriminated against and are discriminated against. Respect yourself, respect others, and you'll annoy far fewer people. Come across as non-offensive, you have a chance to change someone's mind and prove you're not some mindless, feminist manifesto shouting drone ( ... )

It only takes five minutes of thinking about yourself as a person to realize that the colloquial definition is not accurate, and what's more, happens to be extremely hateful and degrading to anyone who happens to be a woman. The same may be said of the colloquial definition of feminists, which states that they are illogical, hysterical, and stupid. But are they? You assume anyone labeled a feminist will be exactly the same as someone else labeled a feminist, in the same way asshole guys will assume all women are the same (and what's more, that they're like arcade games). This sort of move will do a lot to silence and stifle a movement, because it discredits feminists with negative stereotypes (sorry, colloquial definitions) and encourages anyone, even those who could potentially benefit from it, to ignore or avoid them ( ... )
