CHAPTER 8
Nearly four hours later Alex and Olivia exited a cab in front of the blonde’s apartment building. Alex helped the groggy detective from the back seat of the car and up the stairs to the entrance. Olivia was hopped up on painkillers after being given a clean bill of health at the hospital. She would have a hell of a bruise and a headache but everything was intact.
When Alex finally got Olivia into the apartment she gently led her to the couch. Olivia dropped into it and tipped her head back, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. Her face felt as if it had been split in half.
Alex moved behind the couch, placed her hands on Olivia’s shoulders and began a slow massage to ease the tense muscles. She smiled at the sigh that escaped from Olivia as she relaxed into the touch.
"You want to get out of those dirty clothes?" Alex tugged lightly on the shoulders of Olivia’s shirt that was streaked with dried blood. Alex placed her hands on Olivia’s head and she continued the massage, knowing that the detective was in pain.
"I don’t want to move from this spot." Olivia’s voice was light but Alex could hear the underlying tones in her speech. Alex leaned over Olivia’s shoulder and placed a kiss on the lips below the growing bruise. She then patted Olivia on the shoulder and moved away from the couch.
"You just stay there, sweetheart. I’ll get you something to wear." She smiled at the detective as she disappeared from the room. Olivia closed her eyes, wishing for the medication to do a better job.
Alex returned a few minutes later with a dark blue T-shirt and a wet towel from the bathroom. She stopped and watched Olivia, admiring the beautiful woman before her. Her lover was in pain and had gotten that way by defending her. Alex hated to see the discomfort etched on Olivia’s face but was hoping that her own presence would ease the pain. She spoke softly, not wanting to startle the woman.
"Here Liv." Alex placed her hand on the back of Olivia’s head to get her attention. "I’ve got a shirt you can wear and I’ll get you cleaned up in no time." Olivia smiled at the tenderness Alex was showing.
"Okay." Olivia laid back and enjoyed the feel of Alex’s hands on her body as the blonde gently removed the bloody shirt and bra beneath. Alex ran the moist towel over Olivia’s upper body to remove the small spots of blood that had soaked through her clothes. Suddenly Olivia sat up straight. "Oh damn, we missed our reservation, didn’t we?" She paused in thought. "Where’s my car? The cap will kill me if something happens to it."
"Don’t worry about it, honey, I’m sure it’s still parked where you left it." Alex wiped across Olivia’s breasts and let her hands linger. When Olivia moaned slightly Alex pulled away. "And don’t worry about dinner, we’ve still got a couple more nights before we leave so we can do it when you’re feeling better." Finished with the cleaning, Alex placed a soft kiss between Olivia’s breasts before slipping the shirt over her head.
"Sorry to have messed up your evening." Olivia reached up to run her fingers through Alex’s blonde hair. She felt bad that she had ruined the romantic dinner and wanted to make it up to Alex.
"It’s not ruined. We just have a change in plans. We can hang out here and watch a movie or something." Alex sat down next to Olivia and pulled her into a hug. She kissed the top of the detective’s head as she tugged her down to rest in her lap.
Both women were soon dozing but after about half an hour Alex was awakened when Olivia began to move restlessly. The detective had rolled over on her side during her slumber and Alex could see the clenched fist resting on her thigh. The movements became more erratic as Olivia drifted towards consciousness.
Alex started running her fingers through the dark hair while trying to sooth the brunette’s slumber. She spoke quietly to ease Olivia from her dreams and was startled when brown eyes opened suddenly to look at her.
"Easy, babe." Alex took the hand that was clenched on her lap and worked to relax the tight grip as Olivia struggled with her thoughts. After a few minutes spent recovering Olivia’s breathing leveled out and she pushed herself into a sitting position. "You okay?"
"I think so." Olivia started to nod her head but stopped quickly with a wince when her headache returned. "I don’t handle pain meds very well." Olivia shyly admitted. "Plus I still have nightmares."
"Anything you want to talk about? You seemed pretty restless for awhile." Alex rubbed Olivia’s back to help calm the detective. Olivia smiled and leaned in for a kiss and the women enjoyed the passion simmering just below the surface.
When the kiss dissolved it took several minutes before the conversation continued. Olivia wrestled with emotions too long bottled up and the remnants of her dream. She debated whether to open up to Alex. Finally she decided Alex deserved to know the truth and Olivia wanted to start the relationship right by not hiding her feelings.
"I wanted so badly to be able to help." Olivia began hesitantly. Alex held her breath when she realized that the normally stoic detective was opening up to her. She now understood that she wasn’t the only one who had changed over the years and she mentally kicked herself for leaving Olivia alone to face her trauma.
"Do you mean Ashley Tyler?" Alex remained quiet and waited for Olivia to continue after the answering nod of her head.
"Yeah…and I was so adamant about going undercover to flush out her abuser. I should have dropped it the minute I found out her mother was dead." Olivia nestled into Alex’s comforting embrace, drawing strength and allowing her to finally talk about things.
"I know you’re too passionate to put your own well being ahead of a victim’s justice."
"That passion keeps getting me in trouble." Olivia closed her eyes to gather her thoughts momentarily. "So…how much of the story did you get from Fin?"
Alex cringed when she forced herself to recall the conversation. She didn’t know how much to reveal. She hated digging up old pain, but Alex felt she needed to know to help Olivia through. "He told me how he found you in the basement. He didn’t need to voice what he thought had happened when he described Harris’ state of undress." Alex paused to hug Olivia tightly. "I cried at the thought of you going through the aftermath alone. Especially when Fin told me you refused to even talk to Elliott."
"I couldn’t, Alex. It was bad enough that Fin knew. I couldn’t stand for the rest of the squad to know how I couldn’t even protect myself from Harris; let alone get justice for the two women who suffered at his hands."
Alex hugged Olivia tighter, placing soft kisses on the top of her head. She didn’t know how to respond. After all that she had suffered, the detective was still beating herself up about the situation.
"Sweetie, you can’t blame yourself. You couldn’t have known what he planned." Olivia shook her head as she cried in Alex’s arms, safely nestled in the embrace of the woman she loved.
While Olivia cried in her arms, Alex whispered soft words in her ear. She desperately wanted to take away the pain that Olivia had endured but she knew this was the next best thing. Alex continued to hold her lover tightly until the tears subsided and they both decided it was time for bed.
Olivia’s headache kept her from a restful sleep but she tried to stay still in the bed so she wouldn’t wake Alex. Olivia remained restless for another hour and she decided she wasn’t going to sleep so the detective carefully got out of the bed and moved into the living room.
She dropped onto the couch and leaned forward to place her head in her hands. Hissing in pain, Olivia jerked her head back up, realizing that she had rested her palm on the bruised cheek. Curious about the extent of the damage Olivia got up and headed to the kitchen.
The back wall over the counter was covered by a mirror so Olivia leaned closer and was astonished to see nearly half her face covered in colors. She sighed at the ugly bruise and knew she was going to catch flack when she got back to the precinct.
Her thoughts wandered as she leaned back against the counter. Olivia turned around towards the hall when she heard soft footsteps approaching. Alex approached and wrapped Olivia in a tight hug.
"Can’t sleep?" The answer was obvious so Olivia merely nodded in agreement. "I’m sorry, babe. Do you need your meds?" Alex smoothed her hand through the hair on the right side of Olivia’s head, steering clear of the massive bruise on the other side.
"Sure. Maybe they’ll knock me out for the rest of the night." Olivia looked at the clock, grimacing when she realized it was only 1 AM. Alex took Olivia by the hand and led her back to the bedroom to sit on the side of the bed.
"Stay there, sweety. I’ll get them and some water." Alex disappeared into the bathroom and returned a minute later with the items.
"What do you have planned for the day. We could swing by your office and pick up the boxes." Olivia swallowed the pills and handed the empty glass to Alex. She opened her mouth to continue but Alex placed a finger over her lips.
"We’ll worry about that later. I don’t want to see you cause any more damage to that thick skull." Alex smiled to lessen the sting of her words. She replaced the finger over Olivia’s lips with her mouth and let the kiss linger.
Alex circled around to the other side of the bed and crawled in before patting the spot next to her. Olivia got the message and joined her girlfriend under the covers. Alex rolled into Olivia’s side and laid her arm across the brunette’s stomach before snuggling in closer and closing her eyes.
Olivia lay quietly with her eyes open, staring at the ceiling, while she waited for the meds to take effect. Before long Olivia had joined Alex in dreamland.
Just before 9 AM Olivia drifted awake. She rolled over on her left side to get out of bed. When her cheek hit the pillow she was unable to stifle the groan of pain. She flopped back over on her back, gritting her teeth.
Alex reached over to run her hand through Olivia’s hair. The attorney woke up when Olivia had rolled onto her back and turned to look at the woman next to her. Olivia turned her head and gave Alex a weak smile, relaxing into the blonde’s touch.
"At least most of the headache is gone." Olivia sat up in bed and scooted back to lean against the headboard. Alex turned over on her back and joined Olivia, leaning back and putting her arm around the detective’s shoulders. She tipped her head over to rest against Olivia’s.
"That’s great. You feel up to getting out for breakfast?" Alex almost looked embarrassed. "I don’t have much of anything in my fridge."
"I could go for that. What did you have in mind?"
"There’s this place I go to near the courthouse. I need to say my good-byes there before I leave." Alex seemed sad to be leaving the people that she had met. She snuggled into Olivia’s side and closed her eyes, lost in the memories.
"Are you going to miss this place?" Olivia hesitated to ask, thinking she was going to be dredging up painful thoughts.
"Not really." Alex looked out the window, composing her thoughts. "I don’t have any friends here, just people I would see on a daily basis. Never was much of a cook, so I spent a lot of time at restaurants. Once I found a place I liked I didn’t stray very far."
"How long have you been here?"
"Just over a year." Alex sighed and continued. "I spent about six months doing nothing, trying to get my head together. I traveled a bit and spent some time out of the country."
"You were hiding?" Olivia still didn’t fully understand all of Alex’s issues but she was beginning to get an idea. Alex was being completely honest and Olivia was glad that they were clearing the air.
"Yeah." Alex kissed Olivia quickly on the cheek and slipped out of bed. "I’m hungry." She smiled at Olivia before disappearing into the bathroom. That was clearly the end of the conversation.
When Alex came out of the bathroom she was wrapped in a soft robe, her hair wrapped up in a towel on top of her head. She moved to the large closet and disappeared. Olivia jumped out of the bed and followed Alex into the walk in. A huge smile spread across her face as Alex allowed the robe to slip from her shoulders, unaware of the eyes watching from the doorway.
Olivia let loose a wolf whistle at the sight before her. Alex jumped and spun around before breaking down in laughter. "Like what you see?" She teased Olivia through the laughter.
"What do you think, counselor?" Olivia licked her lips in anticipation causing Alex to laugh even harder. She picked up her robe, tossed it at Olivia and moved to gather her clothes.
"Go get yourself cleaned up." At Olivia’s incredulous expression Alex moved towards her, taking pity on the aroused detective. She planted an open-mouthed kiss on Olivia’s lips and sighed when hands strayed to her breasts. Alex pulled her face away while appreciating the touch. "If you don’t get going we’re going to be here all day." She tried to swat at Olivia’s hands before she got too involved.
"That’s fine with me." Olivia pulled Alex back into the kiss but let her hands settle on the blonde’s hips.
"Tell me that when your stomach protests." Again, Alex pulled away from the kiss. This time she was just in time to hear the low growl from Olivia’s stomach. They both dissolved into laughter before Olivia headed towards the bathroom.
Dressed and ready to go the pair flagged down a cab and headed back to get Olivia’s car. It was still exactly where she had parked it the day before. Olivia looked cautiously at the front as she noticed a piece of paper tucked under the windshield wiper on the driver’s side of the car. She removed it with raised eyebrows as Alex approached the passenger side. In neat print it read: Detective Benson, please let security in the DA’s office know when you pick up your car. I asked them to keep an eye on it for you. See ya, Rachel.
"Aw, isn't that sweet." At Alex's perplexed look Olivia passed the note over to her companion. "I think we need to stop by your office first." They decided to get the boxes from Alex's office at the same time and before long they were off for a very late breakfast.
