Photobucket SUCKS

Sep 04, 2017 18:10

This is old news to everyone else but I haven't been around so I was blissfully ignorant of this MAJOR DISASTER WTF. Photobucket already sucked big time, I stopped using it in 2015 because of all the SLOWLY loading ad-filled pages you had to view instead of just showing the icon directly like you can do with basically all decent image hosts. But ( Read more... )

There are icons I don't even have anymore because they were on my old computer, so Idk what to do about those :( But it's not like they were great, I switched to imgur then LJ scrapbook when I became okay-ish. But like you I'm super sad there we will be so many great icons we won't be able to see anymore. :(

It's so good to see you're still around, I just heard that you even made some icons a few weeks ago so I'm very much looking forward to checking that post! :)

Too bad that you lost those icons, even if they weren't great it's still a part of your iconing history so I always want to save everything. I use an external hard drive, so they're not tied to a specific computer, but I wasn't super organized in the beginning of my iconing career so I'm not sure where some of them are, and unfortunately the host I used at first (imageshack) stopped working at some point.

But yeah that is the worst. Old tutorials and old icon posts by awesome makers. I'd love to be able to browse old posts at 20insp for example, but so many broken links :/ I can't imagine this bs move being beneficial to PB in any way.

Thanks!! ♥ I'm trying to find time to make icons, but RL is so busy! I'm going to try and enter monthlyinspo this time, the inspiration post is so pretty!

I found a Google Doc I made back in 2014 that has pretty much all my old icons copy-pasted on it! So Idk how I could download and reupload them from there, but at least there's a trace of them somewhere :D

Same, it's sad. I don't think it's the case for insp20 because the mods always reuploaded everything and I'm super greatful to them for that.

Yesss please enter monthlyinspo, the insp post is amazing indeed and I'm 90% sure I'll be able to enter this time too. I think I'll only focus on one or two of the themes to try and make it a cohesive set, and I'll also try to make a post that won't be expected of me, but not sure of the details yet :)

Wait so you have a google doc where you've put the links to your uploaded icons, or the actual images pasted onto the document...? If it's the former you could use a tool like downthemall, if it's the latter I'm not sure if there's an easier way to download them than to just copy them one by one to photoshop and saving the files there.

Oh I didn't realize that about insp20in20, that's awesome!

So I had a PB account but switched to imgur probably in 2013/2014 or something like that. I relogged into PB to see my icons are still there, and they are pretty much not the greatest icons, so I am just going to leave them there and not fix any links (cause on my old posts I can still see them there or something). I don't know why PB is going backwards but I wish you luck for re-saving your old icons to be backed up. I am pretty much upset because some old texture guides (or other guides) can't even be viewed cause of the big banner PB created and for some reason PB hates the fact that I have an ad blocker so even if I try to look at the old images I can't see them.

Yep, moving to imgur was definitely a good choice! So you can still see your old icons too, it's weird how they've disappeared from some PB users but not all :O I assume they're going to disappear from everyone sooner or later so better do the replacing now. Some of these older icons I'm reuploading are totally hideous so it's not like anyone would miss them, I just want to give people the chance to browse back in my icon comm and see everything still in place, those big ugly PB banners annoy me so much xD

Yeah this is so awful :/ there's a lot of amazing iconing history lost because of this dumb move by Photobucket.

This is such a mess. :(((

I'm happy to hear you're reuploading and updating your links! <3

I had planned to make a backup of the huge tutorial link post a few weeks before PB went crazy, but I couldn't get it to work. I have a spider program, but it just didn't want to slow down, so I didn't dare actually run it on the whole thing for fear of getting my ip blocked from LJ.

And now I am mad at myself for not getting it to work in time.

I'm probably gonna sacrifice my old tutorial step illustrations because those tuts are old, nobody is going to read them anymore.

In my opinion, the old tutorials are the greatest loss. I don't really mind not seeing five-year-old icon posts anymore, but tutorials? Those are always going to be helpful, no matter how old. *sigh*

Yeah tutorials are a huge loss but personally I'll miss old icon posts more. Tutorials are just something that the maker is giving others as an extra, of course they offer more personal benefit to the viewers, but if I really love that maker their body of work is a thousand times more important to me than any extra help they gave out to others. Besides those icon posts (especially the ones I saw when I had just found out about the larger icon circles) are part of my icon memories and as an extra nostalgic person, I just hate to lose those :/ I'd like to think that maybe my work is to someone else what those other makers were to me, even if it's doubtful that many other people are this crazy nostalgic about icons :p
That doesn't mean ofc that I don't also miss the tutorials because yeah some of those were amazing. Mine not so much, they won't be a big loss cause the same stuff was in every single one so if you've read one you've read them all.
