Side note: at both of these places, people were openly astonished at how I managed to sit at the same sound board and rig up the same mics that had always made everyone sound horrible, and suddenly have everything sound full and rich and awesome. "How are you doing that?" I was asked both times.
By using my ears, and then setting the knobs and faders into positions where everything sounded good. Though presumably it indicates I have some sort of knack for doing this that escapes the average person, or more experience at knowing what exactly all the knobs and faders actually do when you adjust them.
Also, the judicious addition of reverb to make vocals sound less stark and dry. But that's just another one of the knobs you can twiddle on those sound boards.
