Anyone still here?

Hello all,

There hasn't been much activity here lately. My Jack Russell Terrier has turned 13 this year. We had a rough year, 3 surgeries for bladder stones, pancreatitus, hepatitus, and now diabtes as a complication of the previous. My Jack is now blind, and as grumpy as ever. My mother's friend took some photos of him before he totally went ( Read more... )

I have two "puddin" jacks- and I have to tell you that time and time again they have changed people's minds about what a jack can be. They have many of the classic traits of the breed, they love to be around people and are exceptionally intelligent dogs totally capable of solving problems. But they aren't yappy, don't destroy things, aren't hyper...they need their two twenty to thirty minute walks a day (which I think any dog really needs) but they are mostly content to snooze on the couch all day. They are also a perfect size for traveling on airplanes with as your carry-on luggage, something that was a major factor for me ( ... )

t's interesting that you say puddins shouldn't "work," as the parent's of my pups rat out stables and love to do earthen obstacle courses. Where did you get that idea?

I never said they shouldn't. They just wouldn't be bred as a working dog because of their large chest and short legs. The chest makes it difficult for them to go to ground and the short legs make it more difficult for them to run. Some Jack Russells are as short as 10 inches, but a puddin jack is a dog with a genetic defect that is bred to perpetuate this. Other breeds with this trait are basset hounds and dachshunds, which both have back problems. These can lead to skeletal and heart defects. There is a difference between abnormality and natural variation. Some shorties are natually short, most are abnormally short.

.but I'm not sure all this obsession about height and the amount of brown they have really matters unless you want to show them.My dog has a lot of brown on his body, and i don't think that matters. Jack Russells are predominately white, so if you showed ( ... )

I adopted my eldest Bella from a dog rescue. My main concern for dogs is that they are happy and healthy. I'm so not a show dog person :P

Zoe, my young pup - okay she is an adult, but still acts like a pup, although she can get into bed on her own now, but digressing.

Zoe was a pet store dog. I know evil and all that but I saw her butt and loved her on sight.

I would wait a little while after your dog dies, just to mourn.

Good luck with your looking.

I saw A Jack at the dog park once, and talked to the owner..when i asked him if his dog was a jack russell, he looked at me and was like, this is a PARSON Russell terrier. I was like, excuse me!! I think he was trying to tell me that HIS dog was AKC registered, as if i cared. I should have been like, well MY dog is a WORKING terrier registered with the JRTCA. But Im not into those games.

I don't plan on getting another dog untill well after my current dog dies, as well as when I know i am going to be living somewhere for awhile and i have a fenced in back yard. I have been looking into russell rescue and petfinder. I have no time for a puppy.

Oops forgot to mention:

Bella is a mixed breed and Zoe is full JTR (but seriously, who cares) and they both are great sniffer, guard and animal chaser dogs. Much to our horror of our cat.

Fearlessly loyal and protective.

I was looking at one website, and this claim makes me slightly suspect in reference to 'irish jacks:'

have a tendency to get along really well with cats

A jack russell who gets along really well with cats! Seems kind of fantastical. My dog only got along with my cat because she would beat the crap out of him. Once she got old he started knocking her over and biting her when no one was looking. He knew the tables had turned, little devil.

I just wonder who these people are to make all these claims:
