Having the boot manager blown away is really odd. Are you running your primary 'doze drive in RAID 0? Do you have it on a UPS? You realize that RAID0 means you're twice as likely to have a data error?

Yes Windows is on my RAID, not it doesn't have a UPS (because they are expensive -- I do want one) and yes I know RAID0 means I am nigh-guaranteed to lose data. I totally know all of these things ( ... )

Man, UPS aren't expensive. You can get a decent back-ups cheapo APC and be just fine unless lightning directly strikes your computer for $60 + shipping from newegg. Even if they're fudging their battery numbers by 100% that gives you 3 minutes at full 220V load plus USB for graceful shutdown.

Also when you're out of town it is generally a good idea to flip the surge protector switch on all non-essential electronics anyway.

agh 220Watt, which is probably more than any semi-idle tower pulls from the wall. I hate that you can't edit LJ comments.

Yeah, it's annoying... you can delete and repost a comment, though, haha.

I should pick up a Kill-A-Watt and see how much juice I suck, haha.

I guess I've just never been able to find a 'guide' about "if I have this in my computer, I need that UPS". We had some UPS' at work that were ~$200 and I was thinking about getting something like that. Overkill for sure, but it's all I really have to go on.

3 minutes is more than enough time for the UPS to make my computer shut the fuck down, haha.
