... but, like, why does Puerto Rico get its own Olympic team? I'm kind of bewildered by that. Especially since I've spend a not-insignificant amount of my life explaining that, even though I was born there, I'm a US citizen ( Read more... )

But, yes, we're having the same discussion. It makes no sense at all, does it?

Like, does OKLAHOMA get its own Olympic team, too?

Yep, I lived there 'til I was six. My dad lived there year-round until a couple of years ago, and he still maintains a condo there.

My favorite was the stupid kid in third grade who accused me (with a good bit of disdain) of being "Cuban."

I'm not sure what the qualifications are either. I think it's only that you have to be a country that most of the world aren't pissed off at - although by that rationale we wouldn't be there, would we?

I was wondering the same thing during the opening ceremonies, when countries that I've never heard of (and have no hope of pronouncing or spelling correctly) would march the 1 athlete that they sent over. I remember thinking, gee that's not too much pressure for that athelete, is it?

Except that Puerto Rico isn't a country. It's a commonwealth.

I am not sure why either? I mean, isn't that like Massachussetts having a team???

I have to find a dress for my sisters wedding (I am matron of honor) and I just can't bring myself to do it!!! Ack!!
