How can you be in two places at once when you’re not anywhere at all:

A bit of complication to the picture; my brother-in-law’s family in Michigan is moving again, this time back to South Dakota.  They did *not* care for the poor suburb they were living in, the kids were having a rough time of it in a bunch of ways (especially recently), and I think the entire city scene really turned them off.  For some reason, they ( Read more... )

Happy girls running around playing is a sight well worth making a significant effort for.

It's a shame you'll be non-mobile. Mammoth Cave is pretty awesome, but you don't want to attempt it if you're not up to a lot of walking (including stairs and inclines). Seeing the girls together will be worth the trip, though.

Cave Country in Ky is neat, but not for anyone with a mobility problem. And even if you were up and running, or walking, there are places where you best not venture on account of your over all size. (Them touristy folks need to be tiny for some places.) Spring is not over the land yet but there should be decent weather. Tell the girls to look at the gunpowder works. (No smoking!) Seriously, they used to mine bat guano to make black powder in the caves. And operate stills. And house TB patients.

I'm aware of the back history of the cave; I have a real interest in caves and have been in a few.

Well, darn it, it's me - Elizabeth from Tennessee, aka "Anonymous".

I think Kentucky Down Under is located pretty near Mammoth Cave, and it's a nice place for kids around 7 or 8 years old. At least, my daughter and her friend both had fun there last year. A bonus would be that they'll probably have plenty of lambs there now, and they let a dozen or so kids bottle feed them at one of the informational shows.
I don't remember how much of it is paved pathways, but you could probably email them and find out (if you're interested and have a wheelchair with you). Their website is www.kdu.com.

H'm. I'll really have to look into that, especially sine Mere has become something of an Australophile from watching H2O and MCLEOD'S DAUGHTERS (We're all waiting for season 8 to start up.)

Susan had noted it before, and said that the entry price was a tad stiff.
