Well, there’s glory for you:

I’m kind of torn as to what to do over Easter weekend.

Susan and Mere are going out of state (driving) to a twin rendezvous with the Harrington clan for a few days.  Connie is going back to South Dakota for her taxes and some assorted paperwork.  And I have two options; go with Susan and Mere or stay put.

On the Stay Put side, it would ease the ( Read more... )

If it was me, being you, I would stay home. I'd use some of the cash I save from not traveling to hire someone to come in and help. I'd make plans ahead of time to get online with folks who can talk to me (type at me) when I know I will be lonely.

It would be easy to make that choice because for me, when I'm injured, sick or just recovering from something my body wants to rest Rest REST and shuttling around in a car and a hotel room doesn't do it for me.

But you are not, in fact, me - and I don't discount the difficulty facing this sort of choice must be.

Regarding Easter weekend, I'll be a Norwescon some of the time - the Foglios are doing another live Girl Genius Radio Play on Saturday - but I'm commuting to the convention, so I'll be available some of the time for online chatting if you decide to go that way. (And, er, we can think of anything to talk about...)

What you need is to stay home, and have folks coming over to stay with you. I wish I lived near you because I'd volunteer. Although I'd love to be going to either of two cons I loved that take place on Easter weekend, I can't afford it. And my sibs don't do Easter stuff (one sib Jewish, two godless, two Catlick, you can see how weird it would get), and I don't do religious stuff.

If I could afford to fly to Chicago, I'd come over and we'd hang all weekend.

If you feel comfortable traveling and can manage the extra cost, I think you should go. Seeing the girls together will do wonders to lift your depression. You've got a lot to worry about and getting away from everyday life is a lot better than being left home alone to dwell on it. You can sit in a hotel room or by a hotel pool just as easily as you can sit at home and at least there you'll get some twin time and a bit of different scenery. To heal and to stay strong, you have to try to be positive as much as you can and being with family rather than alone will help. I'm sure having to care for you on the trip will be less of a burden on Susan than having her worry about you at home alone the whole time she is gone. Are you going somewhere away from snow and winter? That's a huge mood lifter if you ask me. Good luck whatever you decide.

Hopefully, going away from snow and winter. South about 350 miles.

That's a long drive for anyone and especially for someone not in the best of health. That's like 6 hours in the car. We made the drive St. Louis to north of Chicago, all in good health, and it was LONG! It sounds like you can work out assistance at home with everything but cooking. Maybe you could have Susan do up some meals ahead of time? If you're eating a lot of salad it would be easy to chop everything ahead of time and you could just mix it up. You are right, on low carb, low calorie, there's virtually no delivery place. I think it would do you well to get away mood wise but I hadn't considered if you'd develop an infection and what you would do about it. What do your doctors suggest? Maybe you should get your fridge stocked before everyone leaves, stock up on things to watch on t.v., charge up the laptop and just vegetate for the long weekend.

Time wise, that's about right. I guess I've gotten used to LONG drives - Susan's family was all in South Dakota, and I've had tons of trips to and from Ohio to see family and friends since I moved to Chicago in 1983!

With all the antibiotics I'm taking, I bloody well better not develop an infection (I'm on vancomycin and zosyn by IV). The health types said that it's possible to travel so long as you DO NOT stress the foot (especially with your weight) and plan for the IVs and dressings (twice a day) and so on.

I have tons to do here over that weekend, if I were by myself. It's a combination of mental health (missing my family and the twins being together and avoiding at all costs getting depressed over my difficult and still-uncertain medical condition) and the clunkiness of dealing with looking after some mundane stuff (food in particular, but various small stuff in general that is hard to manage when you're forced off your feet).

you might check with your insurance co- it is likely they will pay for a personal care attendant or home health aide for that time period susan is gone. you can also check the local nursing school and see if any students want to work for you then. pt programs are good places to check as well, or you can go thru an agency. this way someone is checking on you daily or staying at your place, and they can do all kinds of stuff to help out. point out to the ins people that the dressing needs to be changed 2x day, and that you need help bathing (esp. with having to keeep the dressing clean and dry) etc and that it is clearly cheaper for them to provide you with temporary 24 hr care in home than risking you going back into the hosp.
our prayers and good wishes your way as always

I talked to the home health nurse this morning, and she said that with some notice, the nurses could be set up to come by for me. I can do the IV stuff myself and put off major bathing until they're back, hopefully.

Past that, I'm a terrible cook, especially since I can't keep on my feet for long. I'd have to think of something, because I can't eat just anything with the diet; low on carbs and calories both. Which means delivery places would be tricky...

You may want to check into Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating (http://seattlesutton.com/). That would take care of both preparation and delivery. There are a bunch of distributors in your general area (IIRC the burb you're in or near).

Not a bad idea.

I would probably stay home, because with the fragile state of your ability to deal with infections and other cellular invaders, going to another state and being in the same vicinity as Other Mere's potential collection of school-acquired secondary-transfer bugs might end up with you acquiring more things you have to throw antibiotics at before you can get on to the major physical infrastructure projects you need to deal with.
