Having grown up almost next to a national guard camp, I'm pretty aware of what being in the NG actually means to people.

Most of them thought they were getting into things for only a few weekends a year plus emergency deployment. Recruitment numbers are bound to have plunged.

After all, unlike people in the military, these people had real jobs.
