Some years ago, my mother (under a pen name) wrote a long series of columns for the FINDLAY TIMES, a newspaper in Findlay, Ohio. This (after the cut line) is her column for July 1, 1995, with some minor corrections from me:

I've got extremely unusual circumstances. I grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, and I always loved going to the high school to watch the fireworks. We moved to Phoenix when I was 15, and when I was 16, I went to the Westercon in Phoenix (1988, I think?). I'd spent the weekend at the con, and my parents got in on a deal meant for locals, really. The Marriott Gainey Ranch has a traditional summer deal, knowing nobody in their right mind would ever WANT to visit Arizona in the middle of summer. So they offer a local vacation deal to anyone who shows them proof that they live in Arizona. It's a beautiful hotel, sure, but I wasn't interested ( ... )

No crap. The weather things I saw this moring were talking 110 in Tuscon.
