My brief attempt to watch some household-based reality TV show some years ago terminated when I realized that unscripted = boring. Trying to set up scripted situations doesn't help.
Most scripted shows are pretty bad, too, but not on the same level, and occasionally one is good.
I'm actually amazed at the number of new shows that I'm watching this year; with a couple of exceptions (REVOLUTION, LAST RESORT) the plotting and characters seem to be pretty worthwhile. (I get way sick of Charlie on the former and the Kashmir episode was hopelessly bad; and the confused, elaborate parts of the Evil Plot on RESORT don't look like they're going to wind up when the show does)
I agree with everything you said about "Reality" TV.
The crucial factor (besides "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public" is that it's a lot cheaper to produce these shows than to produce scripted shows featuring professional actors. So the few of us who wish there were something intelligent on commercial TV are mostly out of luck.
