My niece has been involved in dancing since she was 4. The make-up looks clownish close up but fine on the stage. The most ridiculous make up job was when she was in the Nutcracker and was supposed to look like a toy soldier. I think they put it on with a trowel.

It sounds like the skating costumes (at least at Mere's stage) aren't the "break the bank" level that some dance costumes are. My niece's ballroom competition outfit has maybe 1/2 yard of actual fabric (that you really can't see) and a ton of Swarovski crystal beads on it. I think she got it used for something just south of $1K.
