In the US, it’s possible in most of the country to sign up for internet access even if you don’t have a good speedy broadband connection via Wireless or wire - through satellite-to-ground services much the same as people subscribe to satellite TV setups (Dish Network, etc) - and now, there’s a push to have that in Glotzenfuchen, Liechtenstein - offRead more... )

I know you're just kidding about the goats, but there's no particular reason that people living in rural areas have any less "need" for high speed internet than people living in urban areas. In fact, the opposite could EASILY be argued. People already living in urban areas have many resources that people in rural areas don't, and good internet connections could somewhat level the playing field in many areas.

It's not just obscure alpine valleys in Liechtenstein. There are plenty of small villages and isolated farms within 10 miles of Lancaster, UK, where I live that don't have broadband. In one village, the enterprising pub landlord paid to have cable laid in and now sells broadband to the rest of the community.
