..how does your economy stink?

AP has a map here (interactive flash) on local economic conditions; my home county (DuPage) has (in the last two years) seen unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcies double, and we’re nowhere near the bottom.  Check it out.

As expected, Washtenaw County/Ann Arbor is a little island of not-so-bad in an ocean of suck.

I'm honestly afraid to look. I was born in Mason, and things were already starting to get bad when I was a kid. I haven't been back in over 25 years, and I can only imagine what it's like now.

Where I grew up is only moderate, but that's probably because it's sucked real hard for decades. The whole place lives on selling each other's junk and cooking meth in bathtubs. Except for farmers and retirees.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Back in 1976, when my father decided that we were moving to upstate New York, my grandparents on both sides screamed bloody murder about leaving "home" for some strange new place. My last relative in Michigan, my maternal grandmother, died in 2002, and everyone else moved away long before then.

It looks like the worst spot is Imperial County in southeastern California... right next door to us in San Diego. 30% unemployment... my God.
