I’m Mere’s primary homework person; helps that it’s mostly stuff that I’m great at (english, math, social studies).  I take a lot of care with her on it to (1) encourage her to think, and (2) encourage her to look at things creatively and logically.

I've known an awful lot of people who had kids because they thought it was "the thing to do." In some cases their whole lives are driven by the expectations of others.

I have been the primary help for the boys, Margaret the main motivator. (She objects to my "do homework or daddyogre smash" approach.) The big problem is that the school work is so dumbed down now. The boys have found a lot of history, English, and other courses to be interesting but what the school wants them to include in assignments is so much less than what they learn on their own.
