The Sotomayor hearings are just a farce anyway, since even her Republican detractors admit she's going to be confirmed. It's all just posturing for the cameras and pandering to their anti-immigrant, anti-Latino constituents.

On the bright side, the last 200 or so Latinos who were still planning to vote Republican in the next election have now changed their mind.

Pretty much what you said - a lot of nasty posturing for the base, and they busily burnt their chances with Latinos for the next generation or so. The guys at Ben's Ocmulgee Bar and Grill are delighted, of course.

The modern-day Republican Party, in catering to its worst elements, has established a pattern of alienating more and more groups of people outside the realm of angry white fundamentalist straight males and the women who love/follow/worship them. They've discarded blacks; most gays (sorry, my Log Cabin friends); and are now working hard to kick away their remaining non-Cuban Hispanics. I'm delighted that all the demographic trends are this thoroughly against them.
