I come from a background where large numbers of kids was the norm. Until my generation. It was a little disquieting to hear my maternal grandmother comment that if she had had dependable contraception when younger she would have not had as many kids. Anyway, in addition to 8 to a dozen kids it was common for folks to take in the children of deceased kin or neighbors. Or even kids who just hung out with their kids. My mother is the youngest of 8 and it was rare for dinner to have less than a dozen people at the table ( ... )

Susan and I have had our hands full with Meredith, but she's somewhat high maintenance / needs a lot of time and attention. She finds things like the Duggars fun, and I shrivel with the idea of four kids, let alone more.

I will also note that Susan and I did hope to have two kids, and asked the adoption agency about twins, and was told (as was Mere's sister's family) that we might have to wait until Hell Froze Over before we would get them. That a single kid was the art of the possible and proximate. But if either family had been offered both of the twins, we would have taken them in a second.
