The South Dakotans in my family are big Tom Daschle fans; I’ve never warmed to him, personally. Maybe it’s because I’m not the ”organization-Democrat” sort. Twice in my life I’ve been personally involved with such people, and I’ve found that I’m more the independent hell-raiser sort. Yes, I understand the intricacies of politics; I didn’t get ( Read more... )

I gather that Daschle had two virtues: of knowing a lot about health care, and of being able to deal with those famously recalcitrant beings, members of Congress. And the third virtue of combining the first two.

If there is another individual with those virtues, and the fourth one of not having left his soul behind in a lobbyist's limo, we may be better off.

Otherwise it will be a grievous shame if health care reform is delayed or denied because of one man's personal flaws.

This mess might give Obama a certain advantage: He can now tell people who feel entitled to appointments "It's just a formality -- but with the recent publicity, there needs to be a careful check to make sure there's nothing in your financial affairs that could be misinterpreted." As I understand it, the bigwigs on Up-against-the-Wall Street have come to EXPECT these big "bonuses" as part of their compensation packages. If they didn't get them at one firm they would go where they could. The only way to solve the problem is to make sure NO ONE gets them. Except that they would probably find a way to get the same amount of money which would no doubt involve screwing average Americans who work hard (if they get the chance to) and play by the rules in some other way.
