The NYT reporting this morning that the New York state government is eliminating funding for all zoos, aquariums, and the like.   This is on top of a 55% cut in 2008 for the funding.

Hmm. How does this mesh with the recent exotic food threads? NYC raised steaks?

This would be an excellent opportunity for the federal government to step in with "bailout" money for the states.

1) It's "infrastructure." The money goes directly into jobs and concrete, visible improvements.
2) These uses of public money are incredibly popular. Who's going to argue against rescuing zoos, public libraries, parks, etc., from closing down? These are exactly the kinds of "government" from which people derive direct, tangible benefit.
