The political establishment here was plenty fed up with Blago *before* the whole sale-of-Senate stuff came up. The statement came up at once out of the Powers That Be that *any* appointment that Blago made would be at best tainted, and that He Should Not Do It If He Knows What's Good For Him, and that The Senate Will Not Accept Anyone You Nominate, because it's probable that the person you choose will have paid you off for it ( ... )

It wasn't wrong for Burris to accept the appointment as such; he was way too ambitious to refuse it. Every person has their price, and so on, and Burris is 70, and has tried for Governor or Senator before more than once and failed, and would never get another chance. His vanity and ambition said that taking a sleazebag's offer of the Senate seat was something, no matter how dirtied the selection process had been, he would never have a similar hope in heck of ever getting ( ... )
