The reigning ethos seems to be every man for himself.

Holy crap, she's only just noticing? With a few pull-backs, that's been the reigning ethos at least since Reagan asked, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" [emphasis mine].

Uh-huh. She's either just noticing, or she's coming out from under the kool-aid, or she's gotten intellectually honest enough that she can talk about the Emperor's lacking in attire.
