If anyone around has a good background history on Carthage, suggest away. I’m looking for something NOT a rehash of the Rome-Punic Wars, but information on Carthage and how it worked at its height. Thanks!
The problem is that almost everything that we have on Carthage is from or filtered from the Roman point of view. And because of the Punic Wars, we don't have much else, it was all destroyed, often with extreme prejudice.
Heck, there even is an Isaac Asimov SF short story where the protagonist wants to invent a time viewer machine so that he can see Carthage at its height and get the real story of what the city was like.
There's a fairly recent book, Carthage, a history by Serge Lancel, that's supposed to be pretty good. It's been out for about 10 years now, so you should be able to find some used copies. New it was about $250!!!
