Blimey, if a fourth grader couldn't go out trick-or-treating on her own, we would be in a sorry state. By that age I was drafting maps of my neighborhood to plot out the most efficient route to hit the most houses. And a good thing too, because by three or four years later I was outgrowing my interest in maximizing candy-scarfing.
I think I gave up trick or treating when I was 12, give or take. I remember all sorts of strategies on which places in the neighborhood were choice, and so on.
Our present neighborhood is low on kids, and Mere did one solid strategy - going through the small downtown in our suburban village. Past that, it was usually some sort of route her Mom set up where she would hit more kid-heavy areas near her pal Alysha's house or near her great-Aunt's townhouse. I agree with Susan that after this, she'll travel in packs.
