I'm quite fond of Van Loon myself; my introduction to him was Van Loon's Lives, quite possibly the best $1 I ever spent on a book.

That's my absolute personal favorite of his books. I've read it over and over and over again; my mom hooked me on it as a really little kid.

A friend of mine introduced me to Van Loon's Lives, with the result that I still find myself looking thoughtfully at any statue of a lion I might happen to pass.. :) It's great!

It's utterly awesome. My great hope has always been that someone *good* in the anime world or something would make it into a series of TV shows....
