Ask the Universe - E Readers

My mom would like an e-reader for Christmas. She doesn't want a Nook but otherwise does not have a preference. I was thinking about getting her a Kindle. Is this a good idea? Does anyone have suggestions for a better e-reader? Mom would be doing most of her reading reclining in bed, so weight could be an issue. She is not particularly tech savvy, ( Read more... )

I don't know much about it but Beloved is buying me one - he says the Kindle is easily as light or lighter than a book but he says the main issue is compatibility. If you buy an e-reader then you will buy ebooks from their store only in many ways (or find a conversion tool on the net like http://calibre-ebook.com/ which converst a lot of generic files like PDF to MOBI)

So if you buy, say, a sony e-reader, you're not going to be able to make books from Amazon work.

In that case Kindle may be the best choice simply because of the range of books Amazon offers and is likely to continue to over

I think it would be easier for Mom to just be able to buy everything from Amazon. She's pretty mainstream with her reading choices, so I can't imagine she would really want something Amazon wouldn't sell.
