Well, it's ok, but it's not essential by any means. It's very much a kid's show, and the writing and dialogue reflect that - really, to an insulting degree. And, don't expect the plot of any episode to surprise you - you'll know where things are going after the first three minutes.

Where Avatar really shines, though, is in the meta-story. Combined with marginally deep characters and a cute oevre, it's enough to keep me coming back. The overarching plot of Eng's (Aang's. Whatever.) battle to learn the four elements is really about the journey into adulthood, and the battle to learn discipline for oneself. These are themes I appreciate. And, they often take that journey of personal awakening into interesting directions, even though any given episode is generally rather flat.

Plus, the Water discipline is based on T'ai Chi Ch'uan, and they got it remarkably correct, for a kid's show.

So why do you think it's so super good? I mean, it's not like the writing really stands out. So what's the appeal for you?
