They're intentionally confusing gross loss with net loss to make a more salacious story. Her actual net loss was around $13M.

Ah, that's a relief. A billion was right at the edge of believability for me, but for it to have happened and for me not to already have heard of it was asking me to revise my understanding of the gambling industry's place in society in a way I didn't like.
