You probably didn't know it, but on Tuesday the Province of Quebec is holding parliamentary elections. At stake, potentially, is whether Quebec remains part of Canada or becomes independent. Kind of important, unless you're the Main Stream US Media ( Read more... )

It is important news, but on another level it's the same old thing. The PQ has formed governments before, it's held referenda on sovereignty before - two of them - and lost both, after which it kind of gave up for a while. Perhaps it's up for another try, but the same result is likely to occur. A majority of Quebecois have figured out what A. Lincoln pointed out to the US South, that Quebec can't leave Canada, because it's not going anywhere. It's staying right where it is, surrounded by English-speakers on three sides and Amerinds without much use for either English or French on the fourth.

It is also a battle between friends of austerity (the Liberals and CAQ) and those who profess otherwise (PQ).
