Sometimes I just give up hope for some people.

Ugh. I hate getting in debates with people. I know I probably shouldn't, but I do it anyway. My sister posted on Facebook that if any of the people on her friends list were racist, she wanted them to delete her. Perfectly reasonable, I feel. Then a girl gets on and starts talking about how racism is perfectly okay, because it's just somebody's ( Read more... )

Just thinking of other people as inferior based on their characteristics is prejudice, not racism. It is bad, it's annoying, but everyone has it more or less. But it's not racism if you just keep it inside your head or as a private opinion and treat those people fairly, at least on the outside. It is a bit harsh to be shunned because of it. It only becomes racism if you start acting based on your prejudices and hurt other people. That is despicable.

So, if your sister didn't know the difference, she was also partly wrong for rejecting those people so easily. But the other one desperately needs to open a book and learn the difference between opinion and antisocial behaviour.

My sister wasn't talking to anyone in particular. She was asking people who considered themselves racist to delete themselves from her friends list. This girl just came out of nowhere, even though no one was talking about her, and started telling us that our opinions were wrong and that we were stupid for having them. It was a bit ridiculous.

(Do I know you, by the way? I don't think I've ever seen you before.)

I see. I guess they took it as a personal attack. It kind of could be taken that way, but they definitely overreacted. And anyway, they are free to express their opinion but others are also free to judge them.

(I don't think so. I joined recently and have mostly been lurking. I found this journal while looking around and just thought it was interesting. Nice to meet you by the way.)

Nice to meet you too. I've had a journal for years, and I'm still mostly a lurker.
