Yeah...but the Bechdel tests requires that a movie: 1. Contain at least two women characters (Serenity - Pass). 2. Who talk to each other (Serenity - Pass). 3. About something other than a man. (Serenity...don't think it happens, actually. Fail.)
Wait...wait...looked up the screenplay. Young River does talk to her teacher in her dream about the evils of the Alliance. But I think that's it for women talking to each other about anything besides men. Thus why I'm not so sure about this test as a valid measure of feministy-ness.
It's not a feministy test, at least not in the sense that movies that pass are given a feminist thumbs-up. Part 2 of Grindhouse passes, ffs.
It's about how few DO pass versus how many actual woman-type people have conversations that are not about the opposite sex in real life every day. So it's more a feminist test in the sense of "here, would you like some institutionalized sexism? Oh, you don't think that's real? Well, check THIS shit out."
I could see that, potentially...the women in Old Town talking very briefly about the mob and cops coming back in and taking over...but I still figured that was about men.
NONE of my favorite movies pass the test. Of course, masculinity hangups, yadda yadda. Wait, actually, I take that back. Alien and Kill Bill do. But generally, if I see a Bechdel-passing movie, what that means is that Autumn took me to see it. :p
I don't think it says much about the movies themselves, but I do think it says something about the Hollywood system in general.
this is so interesting... i'm too tired/lazy to see which of my favorite movies pass the test. actually, i'm just terrible at remembering movie dialogue in the first place, ha.
and i love alison bechdel! i read her DTWOF stuff when i was a wee little microdyke in highschool.
