This reminds me of what Corrie Ten Boom said about learning to hold to things loosely, "because it hurts when He has to pry my fingers loose" (or words to that effect--I don't have the exact quotation).

This is really appropriate. It would hurt a lot less if I learned to die to self "quickly" and with lesser protest.
