Fun movie, best of the trilogy, not a moment of boredom. Great action, lots of Elves, drama, tears, what's not to love?

However.

King Thranduil the Exceptional and Impressive, Most Splendid and Feared Ruler of Mirkwood, King by the Valar's Grace, Ruler of 2000 Years, Shining Star of Greenwood The Green, Fairest of all Elven Lords, Light of the Dark ( Read more... )

I didn't hate her as much as I thought I would, but fuck me. Okay - congrats to PJ for acknowledging the lack of females in Tolkien's works. BUT STOP ADDING THEM.

Legolas marries Gimli. The end.

Tauriel/Kíli wasn't that much of a problem - it was a bit annoying and didn't contribute anything, but it didn't negatively impact Kíli's character. The Mirkwood family drama, however, made me cringe, and it was very telling that quite a few people in the audience were actually laughing during scenes which were meant to be meaningful!serious!

Legolas marries Gimli. The end.

Now that goes without saying (but don't tell Estorel, it would break his heart...) ;-)

Oh no, I would never do anything to upset Estorel. :)

Hi, sneaking in because you updated, and I found out you have an LJ (friending, BTW, if okay).
I didn't notice as much Legolas pining. Perhaps willful blindness on my part. LOVED cranky Thranduil, and how they portrayed him for the most part.
What did you think of the dragon story with his ruined, but glamored, face? And what about the almost unmentioned mother/wife?

Hey! Good you found me, I friended you right back. :)

The pining wasn't that bad, imo, until the end, when he told his father that he couldn't return to Mirkwood, and then was advised to go and look for Strider. Basically, he ended up in the Fellowship of the Ring because - heartache? Yeaahhh... that didn't convince me!

Cranky Thranduil was great, snobby, arrogant Thranduil was great, because that all suited him, but the Elf soap at the end, that didn't work for me at all. I don't agree with his portrayal as cruel or heartless. I'm not a Tolkien purist, and I see the movies basically as Peter Jackson's fanfiction, but giving Tolkien's characters a negative twist - I'm not happy with that.

(To be fair, having written Thranduil for 10+ years, my own head canon certainly plays a part in this. And I'm a bit of a hypocrite, complaining about Jackson's elf soap after having written nothing but elf soap myself, heh!)

What did you think of the dragon story with his ruined, but glamored, face?It was a great scene, visually, but it added ( ... )

Yeah, I didn't go for the heartache angle, either. I was kind of thinking that it was more him being pissed for banishing her-on general principles-and even then it wasn't working. What's wrong with just going on a trip just because?

Hey, there's nothing wrong with elf-soap when it's fanfiction. :)

See, I was wondering about these magical powers he has. Since when is that? Not even the high elves have magical powers-except for the rings. I could see him having an encounter with a balrog, maybe, but a dragon? And in that damage pattern? I think it was more elf-soap. Maybe trying to explain why he's an ass? Although I like that he's an ass just because. Hell, maybe he has little man syndrome since he's a grey elf (right title? it's been a while since I've read the Silmarillion.)

I hope there is more about his mother. Just to see what that group thinks about her.
I agree with the question about placement. Why that little snippet? Or was the other elf-soap put in place so this statement would make sense.
Who knows.
