You know, somebody smarter than me has undoubtedly already come up with this, but I think the reason we're seeing so many retellings in the past several years from the villain's POV is because that's the only way anyone's figured out how to tell these tales headed by female characters with any goal or purpose other than waiting for a prince/rescuer. Then again, I'm probably one of the few people who came away from Disney's Little Mermaid wanting to know more about Ursula and less about Ariel or Eric.
Hey, I like non-villain heroines. I like Black Widow (I named my cat after her, after all), and Wonder Woman, and even (mostly) Elizabeth Swann. It's just that there aren't nearly as many of them to enjoy as male heroes, for the same reasons.
the first time my 14 year old girl saw the picture of Jolie as Maleficent ( sp sucks ) she was all over that...we got a mom/daughter day planned for it actually.)
