Weekend M.O.T.E.M.: Andrew Buchan in "Drama Trails"

In 2008, the last episode of ITV3's "Drama Trails" ("six degrees of separation: TV dramas") followed the tracks of "'The Fixer' to 'Trial and Retribution'". Andrew Buchan and Jody Latham (Calum McKenzie in "The Fixer") talk about their work on the show on location; one of the largest council estate in London.

I love these interview vids because they give so much insight into the real person. Andrew's so polite about deferring to and listening to Jody's comments - and then shows his sense of humour with his follow-up remarks. I can't recommend the show highly enough.
Absolutely! Andrew seems such an unlikely hired killer - yet he makes the Mercer character both believable and worthy of our sympathy. His casting was a masterstroke. (Even more amazing was the later casting of Garrow! Such versatility!) Imo, he was more of a likely casting for Garrow than for Mercer, but that's just why it worked so well. The last thing you'd think when looking at him would be "hitman"! The Fixer was fantastic; I so with there'd be at least one "special" to bring the show to a closure. No such hope, though. *sigh*

I agree. I just so pleased that they chose to cast him as Garrow after he'd starred as The Fixer.

I'm not sure they had anywhere to go. I found the final episode so depressing I didn't know what to do with myself! I felt that Rose was a lost cause & Mercer wouldn't have an alternative dream ;)

My idea of "happy ending" would have been "Mercer shoots his supervisors, and they all move to the country, breeding sheep and living happily everafter." Admittedly not a very likely plot, but I can't help it, I'm a hopeless sap. :)

Mercer or Garrow

I can see a similar talent in Andrew Buchan to what was in Alec Guinness - extremely versatile and clever. The only difference is - AB is so lovable and far better looking - which AG was not.

That's an interesting comparison - I've never thought about it, but yes, you've got a very good point there. Sir Alec is really a good example.
