TV Tip/Review: "Sherlock" - BBC1, Sundays 9pm

Jul 26, 2010 00:44

When I come across the threat announcement of a "modern interpretation of a classic", I usually turn on my heels and run in the opposite direction. That's especially the case when it comes to my favourite characters. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are such favourites. "My" Holmes is Jeremy Brett, so you can imagine that my eyebrows wandered towards ( Read more... )

Oh, looks nice! Not that I've much likelihood of actually watching it, xP.

the landlady Mrs. Hudson (who seems to suspect more than bromance in the flat-sharing plans of Holmes and Watson!)
Now there's a female character after my own heart. ;P

It was a great scene. Watson insists that yes, they do need two bedrooms, even if they share the flat, and she's all "oh, I don't mind, we have all sorts here". :-D It's more cute than in-your-face.

I watched it and enjoyed it. If you can get past the non-Jeremy Brettness it's not bad; I'll definitely keep watching. It did seem quite slash-aware; that, the Mycroft bit and Lestrade gave me a few smiles. Maybe my ears were having an off day or something, though; I found some of the dialogue really hard to hear due to actor muttering combined with over-loud sound effects. Also, I thought the pop-up text labels to explain when and what Sherlock was busy deducting were kind of feeble.

I look at the latest Holmes-versions as filmed fanfic. There was a really weird steampunk one with completely miscasted Holmes and Watson (the Ianto-guy from Torchwood in his pudgier days), but it was fun if one ignored that it was supposed Sherlock Holmes. I also enjoyed the movie version with Jude Law and Robert Downey jr., it just didn't have anything to do with Sherlock Holmes.

Jeremy Brett will always be my no. 1 Holmes (just like David Suchett is the perfect Poirot for me).

Mybe it'll arrive on our TV one day, too. Still, those two would have looked so much better in period clothing.

Thank you so much. I am happy to report that SH can be preordered at amazon.uk. :D Guess who has already done so.

Well, some people are born into period clothing.

I loved it! I really like what they did with the characters and the slashiness of the whole thing. The case itself... Well, the solution was a bit anticlimactic in my opinion. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next episode.

The case was a bit disappointing, but everything else really made up for it. It was the first episode, I'm sure they'll find their pace. A pity there are only three episodes, I hope they'll go the way of Garrow's Law and add a second series. :)
