It makes me sadder than I can believe. It's been my favorite bookstore for as long as I can remember, and the idea that they're going to be gone is heartbreaking.
From someone outside of the country who has only been to Borders a few times, I have no idea what makes it special? It seemed to me like every other big-box bookstore. Enlighten me? :)
It's my specific local Borders that's special to me. It's where my mom would drop me off when she ran errands, and I'd spend hours curled up somewhere with a book. It's where I saw the 10,000 Maniacs live, and went to the last 3 Harry Potter midnight release parties. It's where Josh and I went on more than a few dates. I used to work there, and at the satellite store in the mall across the street. I have a lot of happy memories associated with that particular store. It's been the main bookstore I shopped at for about 20 years.
See, that makes a lot more sense to me, now! I understand an attachment to a particular store, rather than just a chain of stores. I'm sorry you're losing it. :(
I'm pissed more than sad. Brick-and-mortar bookstores shouldn't be obsolete, ffs. I still love to flip through books to see whether I'll like them. Online, you get, what, a page? And no end. I like to make sure I want to take the journey with the characters. The only exceptions I make are for authors I have either read and loved or "met" online and loved.
Also, where the fuck am I going to get the perfect vanilla chai latte now?
