Chloe could barely remember what happened. Everything seemed like a blur. She barely remembered being ushered in the ambulance to calm Connor who was crying as they led Oliver inside the ambulance. She could vaguely remember Oliver’s lawyers setting up the room for Oliver, and an extra bed for Connor to use so he could stay with his dad.
“Aunt Chloe?”
Chloe turned to look at Connor, who was still pale. Bart came over earlier with some new clothes for Connor so he could change out of his blood stained clothes. She opened her arms, and Connor embraced Chloe as he began to cry again.
“Shhhh, it’s okay. The doctor’s said your dad’s going to be fine, Connor.” She said softly as she led him back inside Oliver’s private suite. Connor looked at his dad sleeping on the bed back to Chloe.
“How come he’s not awake yet?”
“He just came out of surgery, he needs to rest. He should be awake tomorrow.”
Connor sniffed before he turned to look up at her. “Can you stay with me? Please?”
Chloe kissed Connor on the head. “Of course, Connor.”
Connor moved slightly away from Chloe and held his dad’s hands. They both turned when they heard a knock on the door and saw Lois and Clark by the doorway.
“How is he?” Clark asked as they walked inside the room.
Chloe looked at Lois before she looked at Connor. “Hey, Connor? Why don’t you go with Lois and grab something to eat, huh? You haven’t eaten anything yet.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“You need to stay healthy; your dad is going to need help when he gets out of the hospital...” Chloe said gently and Connor looked at Chloe before he replied.
“I don’t want to leave dad.”
“It will be alright, Connor. I’ll stay here with Clark and we can look after him for a while. You can just buy something and bring it back here.”
Connor just nodded and kissed Oliver on the cheek before walking towards Lois.
“Come on, kid. We won’t be long.”
Once they were alone, Clark gently placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Chloe? Are you okay?”
When she didn’t answer, Clark guided her to the chairs at the side and sat her down. “Chloe, what about you? Are you okay?” he asked again and Chloe just nodded.
“I’m fine, Clark. Really, I am.”
Clark kept held Chloe’s hands as he looked at Oliver on the hospital bed. Reading minds was not one of his many powers; he couldn’t even guess what was going on in Chloe’s mind at the moment. “He’s going to be okay, Chlo.”
“How could we have missed that sniper? We checked everywhere.” Chloe replied, grateful that Connor wasn’t around to hear their conversation. “How could it have happened? We had everything covered.”
Clark looked behind him to make sure no one was nearby before he replied. “I heard some of the cops talking outside. From the angle of the shot, they were able to pin point the location of where the shot was taken. It wasn’t even inside the museum, Chloe. The shot was from the building across it. There was a missing brick where the shot went through.”
Chloe looked startled at what Clark told her. “What?”
“It looks like a set-up Chloe. Someone wanted Oliver in that building; we all know two million is nothing, not just from Oliver, but from every parent whose child was inside. Why did they only ask for that much? And why did they want Oliver to deliver the money?”
Chloe cursed Lex Luthor as she closed her eyes and tried to gather her thoughts. “How far is that building? Was that shot even possible?”
“The shooter could have enhanced abilities because of Lex. We don’t know yet. What we do know is Oliver was the intended target. Maybe Lex is finally collecting on his revenge.”
A few hours later, Lois and Clark left, and Chloe was grateful that Oliver’s assistant arranged a bed for Connor so he could stay with his dad. She looked at Oliver and remembered the last time she stayed at the hospital as she watched over him. Things were so different then; she thought that she could trust him with her heart, and that everything would turn out okay.
She should have known better.
“Chloe? Would you like me to arrange another bed for you?”
She turned around to see Emil Hamilton and shook her head. “The sofa is fine. Is everything okay?”
Emil nodded. He understood the question she didn’t want to ask. “Is Oliver going to be okay?”
“He’s extremely lucky. Any higher and we would’ve lost him.”
Chloe just nodded and asked another question. “Would you be able to do a full check up on him?”
“What do you mean?”
“We know Lex is involved in what happened. We know he’s got metahumans at his disposal. Why just shoot him?”
“I fortunately haven’t had the pleasure of knowing Lex Luthor, so I can’t answer that. I’ve acquired a small fragment of the bullet that I’ve given to Cyborg a few hours ago. The police came to see me earlier. They wanted it for their investigation.”
Chloe let out a sigh as she leaned against the sofa. “Poor Connor, to have seen what happened...”
Emil looked at Chloe, and he would always be in awe of the woman in front of him. He knew about her heartbreak, about Oliver. She had every reason to walk away, but she didn’t. To be able to accept Connor with open arms was a testament on her kindness and her strength.
The doctor just sighed and looked at Oliver’s medical files. “Well, I better get going. Call me anytime, Chloe. I just need to get back to the lab to start double checking the results.”
“Thanks, Emil.”
“Don’t tire yourself out, Chloe. Get some rest.”
He may not have personally known Lex Luthor, but through the Justice League, he had seen Lex’s work first hand. All the human experiments, all the people they saved and the one’s that they couldn’t.
If he was using his metahumans to do his dirty job, then there was no telling what’s in store next.
In Washington, Lex Luthor sat inside the Oval Office and smiled at the message he received on his phone.
“Game on, Oliver.”
