what's the difference between the perceived threat of prison rape and actual rape, which on many occasions while there is legal recourse, none is taken?

There is no real difference, although I would like to take issue with your use of "actual rape" and "prison rape" as though prison rape were not really rape.

I think it's easier for us-society (and also us-feminists) to conveniently ignore prison rape because it seems so invisible.

its a common misperception that i was addressing of "actual rape" versus "prison rape". both are very real. but unlike "actual rape", prison rape is often part of a great deal of comedic routines.
