I read an article the other day, on a sex ed site for teens. A girl wrote in asking, basically, how she could "get over" feeling bad that her boyfriend pushed her into sex she said she didn't want, and stop being mad, so they could get back together ( ... )

One of the things I try to do, when I'm paying attention to this kind of thing in myself, is to find out where I'm saying "should" or "shouldn't" to myself and then figure out what I really mean in terms of what I will or won't do, or do or don't want. There was a time when I tried to expunge the words "should" and "must" and "ought" and all their variants from my speaking and writing -- I think I got that idea from a Thorn Coyle exercise -- but I lapsed on that pretty quickly, because (as I realize while typing this and editing this paragraph) my saying "should" provides a layer of obfuscation. Laying my wants out there baldly, even to myself, feels vulnerable to me, and I don't always like what I see when I do it ( ... )

It really does help, though it raises a whole bunch of other philosophical questions about who I really want to be. Hmph. I seem to be running into all these enormous issues these days, much more often than I deal with the mundane stuff that usually makes up life.
