Drinks with... A stranger. Part 3

They didn't stop until they reached Lee's flat, taking the stairs two at a time, hand's still clasped tightly.  They had lost the men a while ago but kept running, less from fear than from excitement now.  The door slammed shut behind them and there was a click as the bolt slipped into place, locking them both in.  A streetlight outside lit the flat in shades of orange, picking out the small kitchen area and living room, sofa, TV and two doors leading off into what must be the bathroom and the bedroom.  The Captain barely had time to notice the door or the layout as Lee slipped off her jacket and threw it away before she leaned forwards and kissed her again, gently but so full of promise.

"Thank you."  She breathed softly, her blue eyes gazing intently into the Captains green, both colours lost in the dim light, their eyes black as the night for a moment.

"What for?"

"For protecting me.  For saving me."  She leaned closer and whispered softly.  "I was scared."  The Captain grinned lopsidedly and wrapped her arms around the taller woman slowly.

"I find that hard to believe."  Lee raised an eyebrow and grabbed the hand that was heading for her back and placed it flat over her heart.

"Can't you tell?  My heart is racing.  If it's not fear then what else can it be...?"  She pulled the hand slightly lower so the Captain was cupping her breast gently then leaned forwards to kiss her again.  The Captain sighed as those soft lips met her and melted forwards into her arms even as her hand was pressed between them.  It was so strange, it had never occured to her that all her inherited memories were from a male perspective.  She had never thought to consider how it might be different, so very different, for a girl.  Goosebumps rose over her body as she kissed back, cautiously at first then with increasing confidence.  She could taste the slight bitterness of the alocohol in Lee's mouth mixed in with something else, something unmistakeably her.  Lee's hands were wrapped around her gently, lifting the hem of her top and stroking the delicate skin of her lower back.  The Captain finally pulled enough focus back to remember that some sort of response would be appropriate.  She gently moved her hand down, sliding between them before slipping it up under Lee's top and up, her thumb gently brushing over the lace of Lee's bra.  Lee grinned through their kiss and moved her hand lower, skirting round the waistband of the Captains trousers and down to grasp her gently.  The Captain flinched ever so slightly in spite of herself and Lee paused.

"I'll stop anytime you want to.  Just say."  The Captain blushed and looked down.

"It's not that, I want to it's just..."  Lee looked at her strangely now.

"An old boyfriend?"  The Captain began to wonder if she had damaged goods etched into her forehead as she looked up again.

"Something like that."  Lee sighed and pulled her close, just holding her gently.

"We can just talk if you'd prefer."  The Captain sighed and pulled back, her hands retreating out and moving to grasp Lee's face gently.

"Believe me when I say there is nowhere in time or space that I would rather be than here with you, right now."  Lee grinned and kissed her again, her fingers skating through the red curls gently.

"With others that would sound like a line.  So why is it I truly believe you when you say that?"  The Captain grinned and brushed the tip of her nose against Lee's softly.

"Because with others it would be a line.  I mean it."  Lee gasped as the Captain's hands slid down her body again, brushing over the sensitive skin.  It could have been a trick of the light or stray static but for a moment she could almost swear she saw sparks flying between them.  As they moved through to the bedroom, as they fell onto the bed and got lost in eachother she couldn't help but gasp.  For a moment, for one brief moment, it felt as though she could actually feel the Earth hurtling through space, spinning beneath them, as though if she let go they would both fall off.  So she held on tight...

********************************************

She couldn't sleep.  The unfamiliar warmth of another person in bed beside her meant she couldn't settle, afraid of the nightmares that would surely wake them both if she tried to sleep.  Instead she lay still, watching Lee sleep.  She felt stronger somehow, lying here, than she had ever felt fighting or running or travelling.  She didn't love Lee but knew she could, if she let herself, if she stayed...  She could live a life, a normal life.  It was what everyone wanted for her wasn't it?  An image of her father slipped into her mind, a false memory, not her own, one she wished she could tear from her mind and the restlessness overcame her again.  She had once wondered why the Doctor never stayed still but now she knew.  The ghosts come too close if you stay still...  She slid out of bed and borrowed the simple white robe from the back of the door and moved over to the window, pushing the curtain back slightly so she could see the stars.  She closed her eyes and turned slightly, focusing on her own image of the pair of them, sat on the console chair, laughing at some (no doubt dirty) joke or other.  Like an invisible thread tying them together she could feel them out there, somewhere, somewhen.  She could just call them, pick up the phone and they would come for her in an instant, take her home...

A cruel laugh tickled the back of her mind and she shuddered as another borrowed memory pushed itself into her mind, flashes of chains and pain, such pain...  No not yet.  The flashes were getting weaker as she adjusted to the memories, locking each one off, one at a time, rewriting them with memories of her own, her own experiences.  She would never be rid of them but given time they would fade into the background, just a nightmare that would fade with the morning light.  She jumped and dropped the curtain as a soft rustle of fabric carried across the room to her.  Lee was sat up in bed, the sheet wrapped around her and her hair slightly sleep ruffled.  She was smiling somewhat curiously.

"You're still here?"  The Captain frowned and moved to sit down on the bed beside her.

"Is that such a surprise?"  Lee nodded and reached out a hand to hold hers slowly.

"I think you are too much of a free spirit to stay anywhere very long.  I figured you'd be gone before I woke."  The Captain shook her head and leaned forwards slightly, her hand holding Lee's face gently.

"I won't go without saying goodbye."

"But you are leaving."  The Captain hesitated then nodded slowly.

"Soon."  Lee nodded and slid both hands around the Captains waist, pulling them together.

"But not right now."  The Captain grinned and moved in for a kiss.

"Not right now.  I'll stay until the wind changes."  Lee chuckled softly.

"That's good enough for me.  Now come here..."  With that they sank down into the sheets again, wrapped in each others arms until long after the stars had faded from the sky once more.
