Summary: Epic/AU Series fic. When a mysterious message brings the TARDIS back to Earth with a bang a secret from Jack's past threatens his new family.
She couldn’t help having mental images of some sort of western stand off as she walked across the sunlit Plass towards him; watching the way he positively swaggered too it was all too believable. Especially with the new addition of the blasters by his hips. “Captain John Hart.” He grinned cockily as he stopped opposite her, his hands sliding to his hips.
“Well hello again sweet cheeks. Knew you couldn’t resist me.” She smiled sweetly and folded her arms across her chest, the black leather of her jacket contrasting against the green.
“Enjoy it whilst it lasts mate, you won’t be able to see through those pretty blue eyes much longer.” She looked him up and down with a trace of amusement on her face. “I admit, you may be a sweet piece of eye candy but I told you before you’re not my type.” His eyes widened at the phrase eye candy and he watched closely as she brought her hand up to her lips as though to blow him a kiss. Instead she discreetly pressed one finger across them before using it to point at his wrist as she carried on talking. “So tell me John, where is Jack?”
She watched as he spread his arms wide as though inviting her to hug him - or hit him. As he did so his sleeve pulled back far enough that she could see the swollen skin on his wrist and the snug leather wrapped around it still. She could feel his hope breaking through but also his despair at the situation. Something had already happened to Jack.
“He’s fine, having a whale of a time. In fact he’s enjoying himself so much he wanted to invite you and the Doctor along too, after all you are practically family to him.” He winked just slightly on the word family and she couldn’t help smiling a little. OK so that cat was out of the bag.
“Hmm tempting offer but how about I beat the crap out of you instead, then you tell me where he is and I’ll go find him myself?” She grinned charmingly and stretched her arms out wide, mirroring his gesture. “Come on John, you know this is the best chance you’ll ever get to cop a feel.” Chuckling he stepped closer, moving within her arms reach and brought his arms down again, reaching out as though to brush her cheek.
She winced as he slapped her hard, her face shooting to her right even as she grabbed his hand tight in hers. She pulled him forwards as she let herself fall to the floor, her foot burying itself in his stomach as she threw him over her, sending him crashing into the dust behind her. It only took a moment for them to scramble back to their feet, both grinning as they dusted themselves off.
“Nice move, did you learn that off your uncle Jack?” She shrugged and lunged forwards again, punching him hard on the chin before blocking his blows with her forearms, letting him drive her back but not actually get her.
“You’d be surprised what I’ve learnt off him. Among others.” Ducking under a blow she placed her hands flat on the ground to the side and kicked out hard, driving him back again, before doing a forward roll away from him, gaining more space.
“Well you know how to use your feet I’ll give you that. Maybe I should just shoot you and save myself some time.” As she swung back up to stand facing him she grinned and shook her hair back from her face, ignoring the slight shower of dust and grit it produced. She must look a sight already. As he came close again she held her hands high to block him whilst twisting slightly to aim a kick to his stomach. She let out a small oof of surprise as he grabbed her ankle and twisted, spinning her off her feet but she recovered quickly, rolling clear and flipping back up to her feet again with a grin.
She ducked back as he lunged forwards again then swore as her feet were knocked out from under her, a roundhouse kick catching her unawares and sending her slamming to the ground, the breath knocked out of her. In an instant John was on top of her, lying flat across her body as he grabbed her wrists, wrestling her arms to her sides. She chuckled even as she struggled to breathe for a moment.
“You seem to know how to use your feet too. And if you shot me this wouldn't be nearly as much fun.” She looked up into his eyes and saw a moment’s apology as he tried to bring his hands together to activate the strap, her fingers still locked around her wrists.
“Captain!” She froze at the Doctor’s voice in her ear then struggled against John, trying to get a few more seconds. “I can block the audio tracking but not the detonator and it also appears to be monitoring his vital signs so if you stop fighting Gray may know we’ve done something. I would need to be near the source of the signal to block the detonator and I can’t block the comms for long, you would have a minute at most.” She could see John staring at her oddly, his gaze travelling over her questioningly.
“Do it.” His eyes widened at that but she kept his hands apart waiting for the Doctor’s reply.
“Blocking... Now!”
“John, we’re blocking the signal so he can’t hear us, but we can’t block the detonator and I don’t have long. Keep fighting but tell me, where’s Jack?” She continued to struggle against him until he paused, looking down at her oddly.
“One thing first. Who are you? I mean you have some of Jack’s DNA - ok his family DNA, I can’t pin it down but there is something in there I recognise - but it’s... Weird. And you look nothing like him.” She rolled her eyes as she struggled against his grip again.
“Daughter. Half human, half Gallifreyan and I used to be a brunette before I regenerated. Better than L’Oreal. Now where is my father?!”
“I understood the words Human and daughter and brunette. Are you trying to tell me collars and cuffs don’t match?”
“John!”
“Cardiff. He’s still in Cardiff. But a different time, early, there is none of this here just grass. Gray wouldn’t tell me the date he just hardwired it into the strap, I can’t control it. He made me- Jack is trapped there, he can’t leave Cardiff but I managed to sneak a transmitter onto him, to find him again we need to scan for an Empiric particle signal transmitting on a frequency of 200 beta cycles.”
“Scanning!” The Doctor’s voice in her ear distracted her for a moment. “I can’t find it, he’s definitely not in this century, he must still be in the past. Or maybe this crazy plan of yours will work and we save him.”
Or we save him. John pressed down on her firmly and stared deep into her eyes. “Gray is insane. He... He made me bury Jack. Alive.” She looked up at him in horror and wriggled, bringing his hands up to her shoulders, feeling him pressing down against her.
“So that’s madness on both sides of my family, guess I’m screwed then. Does he know who I am?” He shook his head quickly and she let out a sigh of relief. “If I let you take me what is he going to do to me? Will there be enough delay for the Doctor to follow?” Her father’s ex partner stared down at her, his expression unreadable for a moment, as the Doctor shouted into her ear.
“Captain no!”
“You fixed that freaky ship of yours?” She nodded and a grin quirked over his face before fading again. “Believe me, quick is not his thing. He wants to hurt you. I’d suggest you would be better off killing me but if I die this bloody bomb goes off too. Unless you inherited your dad’s immunity to death...?” The Captain shook her head and shifted, wrapping her legs around his waist before with a soft cry she flipped them over, scrambling to sit on him.
“Thirty seconds!”
“No such luck. You go, I go.” He wrestled one hand free and punched her hard, knocking her off him as he scrambled free of her, hands held ready. She wiped her mouth quickly but didn’t move, looking up at him in defiance. “Then take me to him. Let me deal with him.”
“What, you think he won’t kill you just cos you’re a girl? Grow up baby doll, you have no idea what he is capable of.” She growled and twisted her legs into another kick, knocking his feet out from under him. She quickly rolled to sit across his shoulders, his chin pressed against the crotch of her jeans as she let her weight pin him down, his hands working their way under her butt to try to push her off, his eyes flicking to her crotch then up again. “You know, it’s a pity that spray didn’t entirely work, we could have had some fun before we died.” With a roll of her eyes she bounced on his chest and trapped his hands in place as he lifted his legs up to cross his ankles in front of her neck.
“Told you before...” She pulled at his legs and swore as his arms broke free, rising up to bring his hands together reaching for the strap. With a wrench she pulled his legs off her and slid forwards. “You’re not my type...”
“10 seconds!”
“Yeah well, as they say in my century, see you in hell sweetheart.”
“You first.” She pulled his hands apart for a moment longer and leaned down and kissed him on the cheek as she listened to the Doctor counting down in her ear. Breaking off she pulled back and grinned. “For luck.” As the countdown reached zero she let go of his hands, watching as he flicked the cover open and pressed the button and the pair of them began struggling again as the rift took them.
