Authors Notes There was originally another part just before this one but it kindof didn't fit right - as in a slash scene just seemed to break up the flow of the story. I might post it at the end as a "DVD Extra" if you're interested though? ;)
The Doctor liked being first up. It gave him control over the kettle and let him have his cup of tea scalding hot, just how he liked it. The other two always kept the water just off the boil for their coffee which was fine for them but not right for tea. He sat back in his chair sleepily and blew the steam off his cup, waiting for it to cool a bit whilst he flicked through some printouts of the virus code, trying to work out what was going on. His free hand was idly running his sonic screwdriver over a circuit board on the table beside him and he was humming a show tune as he worked.
He was not expecting the sudden appearance of the Captain, her hair flatter on one side of her head than the other and just her long nightshirt on. She didn’t acknowledge him but instead walked straight over to the cupboards, her fingers flying through them as she hastily searched for something. When she pulled out a bottle of ginger beer he couldn’t help his eyebrows rising.
“Heavy night?” She began chugging the bottle frantically and he turned back to his printout. “There’s some chicken in the fridge, that should work.” He heard the bottle crash into the sink and sighed, ignoring her as she opened the fridge and grabbed a plate of chicken, quickly biting into a leg, her eyes wide as she chewed. He frowned and pulled on his glasses to closer examine a line of code, his attention not wavering as he carried on speaking. “Salted peanuts, left hand side of the cupboard.”
The fridge slammed closed and he ignored the hasty movements of his niece as she ripped open a bag of nuts and tipped them into her mouth, wincing as she did so. He didn’t bother looking up and simply waited until he was sure she had ingested a sufficient amount before continuing. “By the way, your dad and Martha once had sex in the TARDIS console room.” He resisted the urge to grin at the muffled squeak and hiss as the detox took effect, only looking up again once she had slumped into the chair opposite him, her head collapsing onto the table in exhaustion. “It was a good night then?” The Captain moved her head on the table to regard him coldly from one eye.
“It was awful. And did you have to choose such a scary image to shock me with?” She shuddered against the cool table. “Oh and before you ask, I was not drunk, I only had one drink all night. I have no idea what the hell was in my system but my hearts did not like it.” She groaned softly, causing the Doctor to frown again. He moved to crouch beside her, pulling her up into the chair and looking into her eyes carefully.
“Just one drink? That should never cause a reaction like this. And most poisons would have shown an effect last night. Did you notice any odd symptoms at all? Fever, a hot sweaty night, increased heart rate, any changes in personality at all? Although, come to think of it that might explain your slightly irrational tea obsession last night-”
“I am serious about that! This is something different. I felt... different.” She winced as the Doctor pulled his stethoscope out of his dressing gown pocket and leaned forwards so he could reach her back. “You even have that thing in the bedroom? You two are just too kinky for words.” He chuckled and leaned around to wink at her suggestively.
“You have no idea...”
“And I don’t want to either! Gross! Look just do your thing ok?” They went silent for a moment as he listened then pulled back and lifted her hair off her neck. “Oh do you have to?!”
“It’s the best way to tell what the substance was! Look do you want to find out or not?” Closing her eyes she nodded just once and tilted her head to the side, exposing her neck to him fully. She winced as she felt his tongue slide over her skin then jumped as another voice joined them.
“Doc I feel I should ask what your intentions are towards my daughter - and I should warn you, I am an over protective father and I do own a shotgun.” Both turned to face him somewhat sheepishly and the Doctor stood up, hastily shoving his stethoscope back into his pocket as he took in Jack’s form standing in the doorway, his arms folded threateningly but a grin on his face. Unlike them he was at least dressed, his braces taut against his white T shirt.
“Morning dad.” She brushed her hair back into place and shifted on the chair, suddenly all too aware of what she was wearing and how cold the kitchen was. “Did you sleep ok?” He wagged a finger and shook his head, moving to join them at the table as the Doctor slid back into his seat.
“No changing the subject. Why is there such a mess in here all of a sudden and why is he tasting you? What the hell did you get up to last night?” She shrugged and suddenly felt about five years old under his gaze.
“I had one drink, that’s all, but I woke up feeling really... off.” Jack leaned forwards and looked at her carefully.
“You sure you didn’t just overdo it, it was a rough day yesterday and-.”
“Pheremones!!” Both father and daughter turned to look at the Doctor with the same puzzled expression.
“Huh?”
“Pheremones! That’s what you taste of, pheromone spray. A pretty potent one too, none of that commercial 21st century rubbish, this is a proper product like Jack uses, well not in an bad way, his is more like an aftershave version, you have to be pretty close and interested anyway to really notice it, but this is a much more aggressive version. I mean if you were a normal human female you would have torn someone’s clothes off and ... um...” He blushed as both of them glared at him and quickly buried himself in his printouts again.
“He drugged me? Bastard! At least that explains why he was familiar, he uses the same bloody aftershave as you.” Jack’s eyes grew dangerously dark now and he grabbed her hand tightly.
“Who was it? What did he look like?!” She shook him off and stood, moving to stand against the fridge, folding her arms stubbornly.
“I didn’t really get his name. We only spoke for a few minutes but there was something strange about him. Ohhh if I see him again I am going to kill him.” The Doctor looked up again curiously.
“Was he human?” She looked thoughtful for a moment then nodded.
“He felt and looked human enough.” She laughed as her father began to react to the felt comment and she shook her head, tapping her temple gently. “In here, don’t worry I didn’t cop a feel. He wasn’t from around here though. Strangely dressed and there was something about him... Oh forget it, I probably bumped into him before when I was travelling and have just forgotten him. He seemed to know me, I must have rejected him before.” She grinned wickedly and leaned back against the fridge. “He wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last either.” Jack moved to stand in front of her, placing his hands either side of her trapping her against the fridge.
“You need to be more careful. That could have been dangerous. We still don’t even know who brought us here.” She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, instead rising up onto her tip toes to kiss his cheek softly.
“I’m ok. But if I see dear John again he sure won’t be...” She froze as Jack’s eyes widened slightly, his hands grabbing her shoulders tight enough that she winced.
“John what? What did he look like?” She shrugged, studying his face carefully as she picked up on the panic coming from him.
“Lightish hair, fantastic cheek bones, a crazy red jacket, kindof like those Hussar’s that attacked us back in-” She broke off as Jack let go, turning around and running out of the kitchen so fast he left the pair of them motionless in shock for a moment before taking off after him. “Jack!” She beat the Doctor out the doorway, running after him as his footsteps pounded through the TARDIS. “Dad, what are you doing?!”
“Stay here, both of you!” His voice echoed back through the corridor as she picked up the pace.
“Like hell I will!” She ran into the console room in time to see the door close after him and hastily scooped up his coat from the chair, struggling into it as she ran after himand wincing slightly at the feel of the grating under her bare feet. The Doctor followed her closely as she pulled open the door, emerging into the early morning sunshine. Their eyes adjusted quickly and suddenly made out her father’s form as it hurried across the Plass towards the bay. There under the bridge stood a figure, the red jacket very distinctive in the golden light. “That’s him!” The Doctor held her arm, stopping her running out in just her dad’s coat and a thin nightshirt, instead watching in silence as Jack ran towards the other man.
“They must know each other.” She nodded then felt her jaw dropping as John lunged towards her father and grabbed him tight, kissing him fiercely. She quickly glanced at the Doctor in time to see his mouth snap close again, a faintly bemused expression on it. “They definitely know each other.”
“Well if they didn’t know each other before they do now...” She frowned as she sensed something wrong, a sense of... panic. “No!” She screamed as she watched Jack collapse, the other man’s arms wrapping around him even as he looked straight at her and pushed back his sleeve. Without thinking she broke free of the Doctor’s grip and ran, her bare feet pounding over the sharp stones, thinking of nothing but reaching them.
Even as she ran she knew she was too late, watching the yellow swirl form around the pair of them and feeling a tingle at the back of her mind. Rift energy. “No!” Too late. With a final glare she watched as the stranger faded and her father’s comforting presence ripped from her mind. “No...” She stopped at last, dropping to her knees in despair. She had lost him.
