Hugging Ianto
It was a pretty normal day in the Hub, well as normal as it could be; Torchwood really wasn’t renowned for its normalness. Ianto had done the normal early morning rounds of coffee for each of the team, before heading down to the cells to the feed the Weevils they had down there, before heading back up to the reception and settled down for a days work.
The only strange thing that really happened was around noon that day. Ianto had gotten up to lock the tourist information’s door so he could join the others for lunch, when a man came blustering in slamming the door to and breathing heavily. Ianto took a moment to study the man, that was in his early twenties easily, seemed to have been running from something and was quite obviously mumbling something.
“Excuse me sir, can I help you?” asked Ianto, so far keeping his distance from the man.
The man looked towards Ianto, “They keep coming, I can’t keep them at bay any more, I don’t want it any more. That’s all they want, all the time,” without warning he stumbled forwards took something from his pocket and pressed it firmly into Ianto’s hand, “you take it, you’ll see.”
Then without so much as a-by-your-leave the man had pulled the door open again and left. Ianto was left rather stunned at that, and gazed down to his hand, where the object had been placed. The object itself seemed to be no bigger than small pin badge, running a thumb over it the surface was soft, like you could place it next to you and it wouldn’t hurt.
Without thinking about it, Ianto pocketed the device for now, remembering that he had lunch to attend to for the team.

Slipping his hands into his pockets, Ianto felt his fingers brush against something distinctly soft. Frowning he pulled the object out, and realized it was the object he’d been given earlier in the day, he had totally forgotten about it until then. Looking back over his shoulder, Ianto realized he’d already walked further than half way to his house, plus with it trying to rain he didn’t fancy walking all the way back to the Hub just to let Jack know he’d been given some mysterious object.
Of course the object hadn’t made anything unusual happen, nothing what so ever. So what if he kept it for the night, he could easily take it back with him tomorrow and slip it into the archives without consequences. Shrugging so his jacket was that bit more rested on his shoulders, Ianto slipped the device back into his pocket, not realized that as he did so, it glowed a nice soft blue colour.
Ten minutes later and he was pulling his house keys out from the other pocket, cursing silently as he managed to drop them onto the floor. Bending down he heard his next-door neighbour come out, letting out a sigh he stood straight back up.
“It’s good to see your home before it get dark Ianto,” commented the elderly woman kindly.
“Well there wasn’t much going on at work,” replied Ianto kindly, the old woman sometimes annoyed him at times, mothering a lot more than was needed. Finally he managed to get his keys in the lock and opened the door, before glancing to his neighbour and saying, “Well good evening Mrs Anderson,”
“One more thing Ianto,” spoke Mrs Anderson.
Without giving any inclination as to what she was about to do, the old woman stepped down from her own door and hugged him. She wasn’t sure why, or where the urge had come from, all she knew was that she wanted, no needed to hug him. After a few minutes she pulled away.
“Well...I mean to say…that is…” stumbled Ianto totally taken aback.
“Good evening Ianto,” replied Mrs Anderson, before stepping back into her own house and closing the door.
Ianto stood there completely speechless for a moment, in all the years he’d lived next door to the elderly woman; she had never, not once touched him, never mind hugged him. Yet out of the blue she had stepped out of her house and hugged him. Feeling slightly unnerved by the sudden display of emotion from her, he stepped inside his own house and locked the door.
Without thinking what he was doing, Ianto pulled the item out from his pocket and placed it on the table in the hallway, along with his keys, before pulling off his jacket and hanging it up. With the hallway light on, Ianto missed the purple glow to the device as he entered into the living room.

The next morning, as Ianto pulled the jacket on for his walk to work, since Jack still had to get his car valeted, he also just happened to push the circular object back into his pocket as well, before he stepped out of the house into the early morning light, locked his door and set off to work.
His walk to work always took him through the town centre, to pick up a fresh cup of coffee for him self. It wasn’t until he was slipping his change into his trouser pocket and heading back on his way that he was stopped by a young blonde girl, that really was probably no older than 12.
And again without warning he was hugged, fiercely hugged this time by someone he didn’t even know. He awkwardly patted the girl’s head, so as not to upset her before taking a step backwards, but the young blonde girl clung on for another few moments before she let go.
Realizing what she’d done, the young girl crunched up her face, tears starting to track down her face before she ran off totally bewildered as to why she’d hug a complete and utter stranger.
Ianto just stood there a moment speechless again, he looked around to see if anyone had noticed, but there was hardly anyone around and anyone that did was obviously not bothered about anyone’s business but his or her own. Shaking off the totally and utterly unbelievable act, Ianto carried on his way down the street towards the Hub.
It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate hugs, but he hadn’t hugged someone since he was about 5 and had broken his arm trying to copy his brother by riding his bike down a makeshift ramp. Course the ramp had split was he was half way down it, and his front tyre had suddenly come to a stop, causing the bike to buck up, sending Ianto flying.
No it was just that, the hugs he was receiving were form people that either never even touched him, or complete strangers. Wonder if Jack has been putting something in the water system again, mused Ianto, knowing that if he really wanted to Jack could and more than likely would do something like that, at least people aren’t running around this time claiming to be all knowing. That really did cause a panic.
Carrying on his walk, Ianto was just about to take another sip of the rather wonderfully hot coffee, when a shadow crossed his path making him stop and look up. There in front of him was a rather large man, tattoos covered his arms and even his head, there were piercing scattered all over the man ears. Ianto took a step backwards, wondering what the man could possibly want.
Again before Ianto could get a word in edge ways, the man had literally drawn him off his feet about three inches above the ground into a bone crushing hug. Trying really hard not to spill the hot coffee on the mans back, Ianto tried to push himself away, but a movement to the side caught him off guard. Craning his neck slightly he saw an middle-aged woman with bright red hair, standing there arms folded, she kept glancing at her watch like she was waiting for something.
Finally being put back down, Ianto took a moment to regain his breath as the large man all but ran away muttering something about ‘stupid drugs’, but before Ianto could even comprehend what had happened, he was again engulfed in a hug, this time by the middle-aged woman. And again the hug only lasted a few minutes, before the woman seemed to come to herself, and blush a bright red to match her hair and scamper off down the street.
“Just what the hell is going on?” questioned Ianto to no one in particular. Before he could take another step someone else was coming towards him, their arms outstretched, “Oh no! No you don’t! Stay back!”
But the person kept striding towards him, without thinking about it Ianto turned and took off down a side street, through several back alleys that led into people’s back yards, before he found himself standing near the water fountain. Looking at his coffee, Ianto realized that most of it had dribbled down the side as he’d been running through the streets of Cardiff.
Bending over for a moment Ianto tried to catch his breath, when the sound of some loud voices caught his ears, looking to the left he saw what could have been a mob if he didn’t know any better. Heading his way, all of them arms out stretched, as though once they got to him they’d hug him. Oh god, maybe Jack really did spike Cardiff’s water supply again, thought Ianto miserably.
Deciding he really wasn’t going to get much further with a cup of scolding hot coffee clutched in his hands, he ditched the coffee (painful as that was) and made a rather mad dash to the tourist information centre. Getting there in good time, Ianto glanced back to find the ‘Hugging Mob’ as he’d now dubbed them advancing quicker towards him, pulling out the keys, he fumbled around with them for a moment, before finding the right one, unlocking the door and stumbling into it slamming the door behind him.
Leaning against the door, Ianto caught his breath, he was getting really worried now, and everybody in Cardiff seemed to want to hug him. He heard them start to pound on the door, turning around he locked the door, and rested his forehead against it. He could just imagine the queue of people that were now standing outside the door, wanting in, all just to hug him it was unnatural.
The sound of someone clearing their throat, made Ianto let out a small groan before turning around. God he hoped someone hadn’t managed to find a back way into the tourist information centre, but then he told himself to stop being stupid. He opened his eyes to find Jack standing there arms folded across his chest, and now he was hoping that what ever had made everyone else want to hug him wouldn’t have any effect on the Captain.
Of course that was short lived, as Jack strode forwards and hugged him, but this time it was slightly different, it didn’t feel odd like his neighbour’s had, it didn’t feel awkward like the young blonde girls had, and it most definitely didn’t leave him wondering if his ribs had been broken like it had with the tattooed man.
“Is there a reason, why I’m hugging you?” asked Jack, as though he had no idea as to what he was doing with his arms wrapped around Ianto.
“Erm…no sir,” answered Ianto, like he was meant to know.
The hug didn’t seem to be ending any time soon and instead of standing there like a rather useless pole; Ianto brought his own arms up and wrapped them round the Captain’s waist. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but he was beginning to hope it was some weird sort of dream and he’d wake up in his own bed with a hang over.
“You can let go now,” replied Jack, taking a step back from the embrace.
Ianto couldn’t help the blush that covered his face, and neck right then and there. He hadn’t responded to any of the other hugs, yet had stood there and hugged Jack back, his arms felt useless just hanging there at his sides now, so he stuffed them into his pockets just for something to do.
“Now as much as I love a cuddle as the next guy, want to tell me why I just had to hug you?” questioned Jack, taking another step back.
“Don’t know sir,” answered Ianto with a shrug, “it seems everyone wants to hug me,”
“Everyone?”
“Yes everyone, from a 12 year old girl, to a man covered in tattoos,”
“My, my you do like variety Ianto,” commented Jack, lightly.
“That may be so, Captain,” interrupted Ianto glaring slightly, “but all this hugging is making me feel…well…uncomfortable,”
“Uncomfortable! You seemed quite comfortable hugging me a minute ago,”
“Don’t make this about you Jack,” countered Ianto, “cause I’m pretty sure that you would never hug me under normal circumstances,”
Jack was going to reply, when the door to the Hub opened and Owen, Gwen and Tosh all entered the little reception area. The three of them stopped at the site of Jack and Ianto standing there.
“You both did know that there is what could only be described as a mob outside don’t you?” stated Gwen, as though it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“No I totally missed that when Ianto came in and happened to lock the door behind him,” responded Jack.
But he wasn’t looking at Gwen; he was watching Owen who seemed to be having some internal battle going on. He could only imagine it was the same as what had happened to him when he’d first seen Ianto, and he couldn’t help the smirk that crossed his face when Owen gave in.
Ianto stood stock still, when Owen approached him, he was getting quite use now to people approaching him and then hugging him. But this was Owen they never had gotten on well together, and as Owen wrapped his arms around Ianto’s shoulders, he couldn’t help but notice the grip was a little bit tight.
Both Gwen and Tosh were stood their mouth’s hanging open at Owen’s odd behaviour. Once the doctor had took a step back, the two women went over at once and hugged Ianto, having a silent argument as to who was going to hug him from the front and who from the back. This time Jack let out a laugh, it was probably the most absurd thing he’d seen in a while, Tosh at the front, Gwen at the back and Ianto stuck in the middle having a three way hugging session.
“Okay someone mind telling me just exactly why I hugged the tea-boy?” questioned Owen, he had placed the counter in front of him, as though that could stop him from hugging Ianto again.
“Not a clue to be honest with you Owen,” answered Jack.
After a few minutes the two woman took a step back, both of them looking a little flushed in the face. Tosh mumbled something apologetic before rushing off back down to the Hub and to the safety of her computers. Gwen had the decency to keep her head down and not look at Ianto, before she also dashed back down to the Hub.
“You know I think I should be jealous,” remarked Jack, causally.
“Be jealous all you like, sir, once you find out why everyone in Cardiff finds me so appealing to hug me,” rebuked Ianto.
“Maybe its just your welsh charm,” replied Jack quite calmly, “after all it is positively exquisite,”
“Oh god, I think I’m gonna be sick,” interrupted Owen.
The two men turned to look at Owen, they had completely forgotten that he hadn’t moved from behind the counter, and it seemed he wasn’t going to any time soon.
“Don’t you have work to be getting on with?”
“I ain’t going no where near him, until I know I won’t hug him again,” stated Owen.
Sighing Ianto replied, “And just how will I do my work with you behind my counter?”
“You’ll figure it out, just don’t come anywhere bloody near me,”
“Owen!” warned Jack.
“What?”
“Just go down to the Hub,” answered Jack.
Very, very slowly Owen moved out from behind the counter, when no urge to hug Ianto came over him, he rushed through the still open door way, back down to the Hub, hoping that he wouldn’t have to see the man again.
“So?”
“So, sir,” repeated Ianto.
“Pick anything strange up lately?” asked Jack.
Ianto tried to reason if that was some sort of trick question on Jack’s part, but reasoned with everyone wanting to hug him it wasn’t. He thought back over what he had done yesterday, nothing unusual had happened, until the man, the man that had given him that pin-sized disk. Reaching into his jacket pocket he pulled it out, this time noticing the purple glow to it.
“I was just going to place it in our archives, it wasn’t glowing when the man brought it in and shoved it at me yesterday,” explained Ianto, watching the glowing object become that bit brighter, “I didn’t think it was anything,”
“Hand it here Ianto, lets shut this thing off,” responded Jack, hand held out.
Ianto slipped the disk into Jack’s hand, once it was in Jack’s hand he felt a strange sort of urge to hug the man. Trying to quash it just made the urge even stronger, until he realized he had taken several steps further and hugged Jack. But it was strange like he was in some sort of daze, before suddenly blinking and pulling back. Looking at Jack he saw the Captain had switched the disk off for it was no longer glowing its soft purple glow.
“See nothing to it,” Jack said, pocketing the disk himself.
“Won’t the people that hugged me, remember what they did?” asked Ianto.
“Probably, but hugging you is a privilege, you shouldn’t be hugging everyone and anyone. Especially when you don’t know where they’ve been,” answered Jack.
Smiling slightly shyly, Ianto replied, “I’ll bear that in mind, next time I want to hug you…Jack.”
