I've watched a few episodes of Gate, it seems promising. I really appreciate that, as you say, it isn't Yet Another School Anime. Hopefully they aren't going to make it a harem anime, and will focus more on technology versus fantasy.
I didn't like the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, though; I did watch it but... It just didn't grab me because of the central dichotomy of a schoolgirl earnestly convinced life is boring, and yet she's surrounded by all the things she wants to discover and they won't reveal themselves because, reasons.
Aria: Yes, though it's been quite a while ago, and my memory is a bit fuzzy already. Gwendel actually has a wallpaper on her computer from Aria; she was more the driver of our watching it than I was.
I thought the concept was interesting, and it has lots of nice visuals, but after a while I just want some sort of story to grab me. A mystery to be solved, a conflict to be resolved, some personal flaw of character to be worked out, some goal to be achieved -- something that indicates the story is going somewhere -- or it's a little hard to hold my interest after a while.
Melancholy: Well, there were reasons, but they were rather frighteningly existential ones, if one thought about it too much.
Oh, and if there were ever an Aria video game -- say, first person view, transporting passengers through the canals -- I would SO play that. ;) Kind of like the "Venice" part of Assassin's Creed, only without all the stabby-stabby stuff. :D
Been watching Classroom Crisis per your recommendation. It actually seems pretty neat in factoring in business management and such, that you wouldn't usually see in an anime. Kind of like Bodacious Space Pirate in that regard, where the title is silly and the story actually does a pretty good job of making sense and being more hard science fiction than bubblegum space fantasy.
It's still on our to-watch list, but all my travel over the past few weeks has derailed "anime night" for us for a while -- so I'm several episodes behind. I hope we'll get a chance to catch up soon.
