Just such an approach works for the military.
I spent eight years in the Marines, going on twenty since I separated. Out of a dozen employers the USMC was the most diverse and meritocratic.

I think it's a pretty dumb rule, myself. Prior to 1993 being gay at all was enough to get you canned, and now .. it's okay to be gay just don't act as if you are, or tell anyone.
Lame.
What we should do is lift the ban. Entirely. Get it over with and done - this half-and-half stuff is like pulling a band-aid off slowly.
But please note the military did not set the policy, nor do they have discretion to ignore it. The executive branch set that policy in 1993. Until it's changed - by the President - all the military can say is 'yes sir' and carry out their orders.
Are there some commanders who ignore it? I'll bet there are:
"Sgt, you're an outstanding leader of men, you've done two tours in Iraq, I'm going to walk OUT of this room and that gay pr0n is going to evaporate when I come back in. Then we'll speak no more about this."But if he had knowledge of Sgt X's gay pr0n and this later came to light he'd be in a pickle ( ... )
