From the Italian news agency, ANSA, the following very simple piece of news about what happened yesterday:

A chlorine-gas attack by Islamic State (ISIS) killed some 300 Iraqi soldiers at Saqlawiya, north of Falluja, Iraqi MPs from the area said Monday. If they killed around 300 soldiers, then this was either an ambush in barracks, or a fairly ( Read more... )

These are very, very grim times.

Well, that's not reassuring news to wake up to! I just hope this will rally more support towards stopping ISIS because if they have and are willing to use chemical weapons that raises the threat level significantly.

It could, if Obama were serious about waging this war. I remain convinced that he is doing the minimum possible, with his military advisers practically begging him to do more and he imagining that he is being "responsbile" by preventing "escalation." Obama's simply that kind of a fool.

Nothing substantial will be done until the blistered dead are piled in a Manhattan subway tunnel.

Liberals thrive on waiting until something happens and playing the blame game. The more loss of life the better the PR.

Plus, until we get hit hard, Obama will remain convinced that he can keep the violence overseas. He hasn't even succeeded, as witness the Oklahama "workplace violence" jihadist.

Terrifying. People continue life with this in the background, and don't speak of it often, but now and again -- when they do, I can tell even the lefties I know are rattled. But again, I have only spoken of it with a few. I feel like we could be standing at the edge of something huge, and it is coming toward us...

I think you are right that Obama is being foolish but at least he is doing something. He will have to do more... I don't know that he will until and if -- something horrid happens in the US.

This news just doesn't get any better.

ISIS has almost reached the gates of Baghdad. If the Iraqi government can't even hold its capital -- and, mind you, Baghdad is very far from the points at which ISIS originally invaded -- it will no longer be seen as credible within its own country. If ISIS conquers Iraq, then not only will hundreds of thousands to millions die, but Al Qaeda will have an actual nation-state under its control. A major war seems unavoidable.

The U.S. government played down the threat from the takeover, saying there are no intact chemical weapons and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to use the material for military purposes.

Did the government hire Baghdad Bob to do their propaganda?

If there were intact chemical weapons, you see, that would at least partially vindicate W Bush and we can't have that...

Perceiving themselves as having been, and always being, right is far more important to them than mere mundane reality.

I always find suspicious anyone who is willing to sacrifice *other people* for an ideal.
