Sparrowind published

Sep 15, 2014 01:25

I was recently made happy and proud to learn that my good friend cutelildrow had written and e-published a novella.  The book is Sparrowind, and it's about a young dragon who tries a new approach to life based on what he finds in books.  I've bought it and hope to review it within a few days.  I hear her sales are already climbing and that the book is likely ( Read more... )

This is just nonsense fantasy that takes the very common idea of the friendly dragon which has been done before to death it's just a rip-off of Petes Dragon by E E Knought or whoever that guy is. We need more books which challenge notions of gender identity and the cismale white heteronormative hegemony. White girls like Modena should stop writing science fiction!

You were, afaik, raised in a mostly-Christian culture, so you probably know the important referents.

Actually I meant that he probably wasn't born until years after the book came out, so he has no understanding of what the world was like in the 70's, and therefore why the book resonated so well with so many people.

I read it when I was flying in the Air Force, my roomie was a fan of the writer and loaned me a few of his stories. Lots of very interesting stuff about flying and teaching people to fly, and just how cruel and unforgiving flying is.

Jonathon Livingston Seagull is actually not a very long story, but it is an interesting one, especially if you've read some of his earlier observations on seagulls, which from the point of view of a pilot have pretty awesome aerodynamics, which sadly they never really use to the full extent possible.

And that was another message in the book, trying to live up to your potential. Something which our site pest would never understand, because he doesn't.

The message of 'living up to your potential' was the one I took away from it, honestly. It's inspiring for that reason alone, because it was presented in a way that doesn't treat the reader like an idiot the way a lot of the self-help books I've been assigned as reading for classes do.

And ultimately I think that's why the site pest doesn't grok Jonathan Livingston Seagull. But since he's admitted that he's too stupid even to try reach the 'low standards' of self publishing... we really shouldn't be surprised.

Ugh, people who use the term "grok" should be Goblin Punched in the crotch.

Why, because Robert A. Heinlein is a writer who is still widely read for his excellence three decades after his death, whereas if you're lucky your work will at best be passed around at conventions in contests to see how much of it people can read aloud before breaking down in helpless laughter?

Because he doesn't think it a good book? That's not a difficult question.

One might think the philosophy not very intense, and for that reason file it under unworthy best-sellers stealing the glory that could go to better books. . . .

So I don't have to pay for something that could be utter shit.

"Indie publishing" is a giant circle jerk.

Whereas publication through one of the big houses is not a "giant circle jerk" because ...?

Hang on, IS it Yama? Is he seriously sour graping about indie publishing again? I heard over the grapevine that he couldn't even meet the minimum basic standards to be self published anywhere.

But he's also not published by the major houses either, so what method of publication does he prefer?

Not sure. for free on devart seems to be his only route.

And I'm really, really not sure why he slams indie anything so much. Mojang just got acquired by Microsoft for 2.5 billion dollars.

Mojang created Minecraft. Minecraft is one of THE most successful indie games EVER. And thanks to the purchase, probably THE most profitable, not even counting the money they made BEFORE selling.

He slams them because it's easier for him to hate on these people than to try and do something original himself. Just think of how much effort he puts into all of this, but he still can't be bothered to learn how to write.

I honestly believe he's mental, and we only see these flare ups when he's off his meds.

I have no argument on the belief that he's mental. He regularly displays that he's howling, barking, frothing, stark raving, why-is-he-out-of-a-strait-jacket mental on a regular basis.

Hey, he can keep putting this much effort into all of this. He's wasting his time doing what he's doing. THE BOOK IS BEING SOLD BY A COMPANY. There's absolutely nothing he can do to stop sales.

That knowledge must absolutely BITE.

And the most hilarious part is, this is the 'best' he can do.

At night sometimes I think I can hear his anguished cries all the way from Massachusetts as our writing careers takes off and people pay us money to read our stories.

Just remember to keep writing, the more you publish, the more you will sell. I'm honestly thinking of quitting the new job I just got before I even get there because I'm afraid it will interfere with my publishing schedule.
