Introducing MLP's to Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror

Nov 29, 2013 17:13

I commented on FIMFiction Net on Xepher's story Three Wishes: the Hole in the Sun (sequel to another excellent story by the same author), that if I wanted to introduce Rainbow Dash to genre science fiction I'd start with E. E. "Doc" Smith's "Galactic Patrol," which our favorite supersonic pegasus would probably consider "AWESOME!"  That led me to ( Read more... )

Totally agree with you on Pinkie and Fluttershy, especially Fluttershy liking Andre Norton. Fluttershy is basically Ponyville's equivalent of a "Beast Mistress" as it is.

Rarity for some reason I can see really going for Lois McMaster Bujold's work. I think she'd like a lot of world-description in any genre. She would especially go for description of clothing, decor architecture and the like. If the concept of her as both romantic and yet repressed, and thus especially into bodice-rippers is true, I could see her loving the Dark Romance subgenre with love involving supernatural creatures.

I agree with you that Applejack would go for action-adventure, especially action-adventure with a strong focus on the integrity of the protagonists. I could see her liking Poul Anderson, maybe Tolkien as well, possibly Dean Koontz.

I could see her loving the Dark Romance subgenre with love involving supernatural creatures.

Possibly bought for her by Spike, in the hopes that she'll take the hint.

And talking Applejack, maybe she'd go for Manly Wade Wellman. The setting for many of his later stories would seem rather familiar to her. Kuttner's Hogbens stories might amuse her as well, what with the immortal mutant genius 'hillbillies'. Their getting one over on nasty neighbors and snooty 'city fellers' would probably be as comical to her as me.

Hey, that's right -- Rarity's real love life fits into in the Dark Romance subgenre. Complete with an effectively-alien beloved. I honestly think that the biggest obstacle in her mind is Spike's ambiguous age -- is he a baby? Child? Adolescent? Adult? All of the above, by different definitions. What's a mare to do? Especially one equipped with a functional conscience.

Heh, yes I can see Applejack liking the Wellman stories, for the same reasons that it made perfect sense in your story for her to like Silver John himself. Also Kuttner's stories.

How about Zenna Henderson's "People" tales? Similar sensibility, but much less action-oriented. Hmm, maybe Big Mac would go for those? He's a major sweetie under all his toughness and masculinity, as has been shown in canon.

Oh yes; I'm kind of surprised to see that you're a fan of the Pony POV stories. I'm one myself and I count it as a privilege that I got to write two or three entries for it (even if two of them are very, very non-canon to the fic).

What I especially love about Pony POV is the way that it ties all four versions of My Little Pony together into a single continuity. (Though Cosmic Forces had to erase G3 from the multiverse in order to make that possible).

My Trinity is very much inspired by the Pony POV continuity.

Oh, just where is this Trinity story? I think I'd like to see it.

Up on Fantastic Worlds: Chapter 1: I Have Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds and Chapter 2 "Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Natural Law."

Also on FIMFictionNet as Trinity .

Still a work in progress, but I welcome opinions on what I've done so far.

Podkayne practically is a human teenaged version of Rarity Belle :)

Ah, but which version of Podkayne? _eg_

Personally, I prefer the original, unsanitized, version. Although, I am somewhat of an exception. ;-)

Don't know anything about these ponies but what about C.J. Cherryh? Chanaur and the related books are good for young females.
