There's been significant intelligence in the past few weeks showing increased activity in the Sinai, that specifically that Eilat was going to be a major target.

For what it's worth, the Muslim Brotherhood has been making a lot of noise about how "Zionist terrorists" were going to attack Egyptians in Eilat, so they were going to "strike first".
